I really like this because I think this is the most Gary looking Gary I've seen from you. And value studies are very hard, but I think this is a good effort that gives off the right amount of atmosphere.
If there was any advice I could give you for doing gray scale, is not to focus so much on trying to translate or represent a certain color to a certain shade of gray, but rather focus more on creating the best or most interesting contrast in your composition. Like making sure your lights and darks are well broken up, not making things too dark in one area, and too light in another. Because if you have one area of the composition that has a lot of dark shades of gray, the effect is that it will look like one dark blob to the eye. Same if you have a lot of light shades next to each other. The more contrast you have, the greater feeling you'll have of volume and space in your composition. If that makes any sense.
For instance, you could perhaps afford to darken the shadow on Gary maybe a notch. And you could also lighten up the highlight on both of the legs of the orderlies. Generally a good rule is to squint your eyes at your drawing, and if any of the values seem to blend into one another without any clear contrast, then you could afford to lighten a highlight or darken a shadow in those areas to create a greater contrast. That's the effect I'm getting with both of the orderlies' legs. Also if you want more emphasis on Gary, or make him stand out more, you could maybe lighten the walls and the floor of the background a little.
However doing values or gray scale is a give and take process, so you have to be careful and observant. Since contrast is all relative, all your darks will seem darker next to lights, and lights will seem lighter next to darks. So if you darken Gary's shadow, that will lighten everything around him, like the background, and make him stand out more. However if you lightened the walls and floor, that will darken the shadow on Gary, and also make him stand out more. So you could do either, or both.
Of course that's all just one way to do things, it just depends on the effect you're going for. Enhancing the contrast in your composition will give your figures more presence, and they'll feel rounder, and more solid, and more weighted. If that's not what you're going for, there's other ways to make the eye go to what you want, so you can just experiment with what looks the best to you.
Long comment is long, but I hope it was helpful in at least some way to you. C:

That's cool; I think i will try to darken Gary's shadow a bit... I wanted to the orderlies to be kind of dark and graphic though--the amount of detail they have now is actually more than i intended them to have. That's just how my style is, I guess. I was just really concerned with Gary being readable. I guess it'll all depend when i make a photocopy. The orderlies might just sink too much into the background so i might try to make the walls and such lighter.

Yeah, like I said, my suggestion was just one way to do things. It all depends where you want the eye to go, or how to emphasize things. I know you're familar with . Look at this drawing of Jimmy she did recently, [link] . I think she's a pretty good example of someone who uses effective and interesting contrast in her black and white pieces. Everything is clear and stands out in just the right way. Notice how the shadow on Jimmy is rather dark, but you can still make out all the lines and detail she put in there anyway, and at the same time it makes him stand out the most. Even if you look at everything else your eye still wants to go to him. I thought this would be a kind of help piece to look at since the shading on her Jimmy is pretty similar to what you're trying to do with Gary. I'd suggest taking a look at some of her other black and white drawings. She's a pretty good artist to study if you're looking for help with this kind of stuff.

HEAVY BREATHING. I am so excited about this I WANT THIS ZINE. You two are my faves~
Also LOOK AT THAT BRUSHWORK look at it. It is awesome. You did a good job with the values, too; when it photocopies everything will get darker and more towards middle-tones, but you've differentiated enough that I think it'll be fine. A+
