Description This is something that’s been in my mind for a long time. It’s also the second time that I’ve tried to create the image but again it didn’t come out the way I’d intended. The image in my mind is of a woman dashing through the rain (hence the umbrella), going somewhere important – somewhere that she actually wants to be…

In the end, I’ve finished with Cinderella making her way to the ball.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinderella’s stepsisters weren’t BOTH ugly/evil. In fact, the younger of the two – Danielle was sweet but very shy. The day Cinderella went to meet her Prince Charming, she tried to be happy for her – she WANTED to be happy for her but it was hard. She knew that if she won his heart, she would be alone in the house and that didn’t bode well at all for her…

The garlands/tinsel on the tree are a phototube and I’m not sure if they were with PSP originally or I downloaded them. If you know their origin, please let me know so I can give credit. Thanks.

This is very good Emily.... As it is I have only one slight criticism... The seated figure needs to be level adjusted and nore saturated... and better lit....

and the main character toned down in relarion to her....

I really like the composition though... lovely idea....

Not sure what you mean by level adjusted but the darkness of the Stepsister is intentional - I wanted to show that while Cinderella is bright and glowy because she knows something wonderful is about to happen, Danielle knows that things are only going to get worse for her so she's very unhappy.

As I said to Raven, it was either that or a raincloud over her.

For me viewing it it seems as though it is washed out... no vibrance to the foremost character.... you can adjust this in PSP or photoshop with levels.....

in addition I feel the colour is 'off'... that can be adjusted in a number of ways.....

I pretty much guessed what you are trying to convey with the image but still feel this needs to be achieved to balance the image....

Compositionally though it is strong and above all it is great to see you stretching your wings..... not sure I have seen anything like this from you before....

o_o In my humble opinion, the colors are the way she wanted them to be, therefore they don't need to be adjusted at all. I understand that you are trying to help her, but she told you that it was the way she wanted it in the post before your last one. It seems as if you're picking and trying to find something wrong with it. She didn't ask for advanced criticism, and with all due respect, I don't think she needs it. I have all respect for you and I'm not flaming, but I'm just putting my two cents in since it's public and it seems like lately all over dA everyone is trying to find something wrong with everything. Have a nice day.

ZooFractals In reply to RyuRaven [2008-11-29 01:18:36 +0000 UTC]

you too...as far as the nice day goes....

If emily wants to discuss it with me then fine....

Point being that the post invites comment and criticism...

I teach Photoshop as it happens and have done so for 6 years... I have been using it 10'

Apart from that I have a strong artistic background and know what I am talking about....

I do not for one second appreciate the tone of your comment - Let that be noted. The comments I left on Emily's post were constructive as to what would make a more balanced and finished work! Furthermore they were done in a cordial manner

Thank you - and good day...

It's quite a different thing when someone who hasn't a clue what they are on about makes stupid comments on pieces of art.... I get my fare share too and often either dismiss them or let them know why I did something the way I did
it....

I get morons going on about watermarking and textures.... yes I use light textures to protect my work from would be thieves...

Emily and myself have been friends for over a year now... I offer constructive and objective criticism where it is invited..... no more than that.... and if a post is open for comment it is open for exactly that.

I am sick to death of social networkers butting in in the way you have just done here..... I am far from picking faults and if you had done your homework first you would have had a good idea that I know what I am talking about.....

My beef here is where the heck are the Artists???? Yes... I am sick to death and beyond of the buddy buddy bs that goes on here and people faving friends work and not even looking at the real art pieces here.... Yeah I did a couple of journals about that and even stopped showing my fractals here for quite a while.... people begged me to bring then back...

So all that said... who are you????

Actually Zoo, Raven has been my friend for a long time and she was merely looking out for me.

I was upset by your comments and she knew this. As to what you have said here, you still stated what you felt was wrong with the piece...after I explained why the two sisters were so different.

At the end of the day, I am still only learning about photomanipulation and I do appreciate help but pointing out what seems a lot of problems with the thing is only discouraging - especially when the many problems I have with it ISN'T the way the two women turned out.

Emily - I pointed out to her that whatever comments I made were consrtructive....

When you upload a comment here on dA you have options to invite constructive criticism or not....

I did a whole journal about this a while ago.... and I am sorry to say that if what I had to say in attempting to help you (as you say you are only learning) offended you then I am afraid the blame is firmly on you for inviting comment.... I did not try to rubbish you in any way and said twice in my comments that it was an excellent piece....

I guess best our paths don't cross again.... When your friend waded in with the 'Sisters' comment I almost puked..... seriously. I have not been well lately but I am not using that as an excuse... I have written in many a journal that tis 'Sister' b***s**t is a serious cancer here on dA and where I come across them I automatically ban them....

Too bad at the end of the day you cannot take constructive criticism (particularly when you ask for it when submitting an image)

I have had my fair share of comment and I ma agree or disagree but I dont go wailing back on the person who gave it - as it was their opinion... (constructive)
I may discuss the reasons why I do things.... In this case your friend is bang out of order.

Lets leave the matter there shall we.... I will not be watching or visiting or chatting with you henceforth.... I though it was nice knowing you... but you're not the first nor will you be the last to prove me wrong.

Bye!

Incidentally if it was you who was upset it is you who should have discussed the matter with me..... That is one of the serious negative issues here - that your friends barge in on your behalf... what is this????

You might well puke at the thought of Raven and I calling each other sisters but she's been a good friend to me for around four years OUTSIDE OF DA. I have talked to her for hours each day and she's seen me through a lot of bad times but hey! You're absolutely right - I've never met her so those times count for nothing, right?

Zoo, I'm going to say this because I think someone needs to - you seriously need to chill out in relation to dA. Stop taking it all so seriously. People are people and you'll never change them. People fave things they like - they can bring back a memory, perhaps the colours please them or any other vast number of reasons.

I'm sorry that because of a disagreement you feel the need to drop me as a friend - I have enjoyed watching your stuff and I have taken advice from you in the past but if that's how it is to be, then okay.

Take care of yourself.

ZooFractals In reply to RufusShinra4179 [2008-11-29 02:16:21 +0000 UTC]

I have said it time and again.... and your friend Raven used the word Sister.....

To me that means of the same mother,,,,,

As for taking it seriously - This is supposed to be an Art Community and not My Space or Facebook where you can upload unlimited pictures and basically go around saying whatever you want....

Again if you don't want criticism - turn off comments on your images... your friends can still note you!!!!

Here people don't fave things they like - they try to hang in with whoever is popular and fav utter rubbish at times when wonderful artwork goes totally unvisited....

I proved that in 3 of my journals a few months ago..... and as a result decided to pull my fractals from here.... proof indeed that dA is anything but an Art Conmmunity.... It is only for a handful of friends imploring me to do so that I came back..... and straight away I get served up this doo-doo!

Thanks but no thanks.... and gain if you cannot take constructive or objective criticism on your work then don't invite it....

I did a Journal on this about a year ago in relation to this very issue tht asose with another friend of mine at the time..... and not surprisingly just about everone agreed with me.... There are no ifs/and buts... and indeed this place is filled with just about every personality type.... bottom line is if you don't want criticism them chose the right option before you hit the submit button....

Unlike your friend I wish you the very best....

- Zoo

Please don't feel the need to reply to this. I don't want to continue. I just want to say something:

When I first posted this, there were a million mistakes, there's maybe now just a thousand.

You could have chosen to point out that the castle was jagged where it had been added or that I'd missed part of the stairs when I had changed their hue to match the castle. You could have even pointed out that the sky was blurry where I hadn't cleaned the castle layer or that I hadn't removed the tree properly that had been at the side of the castle. All these things would have been helpful and indeed welcome. The problem, was that you chose to find fault with the stepsister who I was completely happy with...

I'm Emily's sister, her friend going on three or four years. I don't care how much of an artist you are or how long you've been an artist. I spoke my mind because after all, this is a free area in which I may do so. Who died and made you king? I don't see where she asked for criticism over it, you just kind of volunteered it like you were up on a high horse. I don't care if you appreciate my tone or not. I was speaking my mind and I can do so whenever I choose to do it. There is something called freedom of speech. It may not be applicable in all other countries, but it is right now on dA on the internet. Emily doesn't have to discuss anything with you because I acted on my own accord. I was just pointing out what I thought of you and what you said and I'll do it again whenever I please.

No, you have a very nice day. Or night, where I am!

Typical... exactly what I am talking about... This 'sisterhood' that exists here....

Look here sister... If you ever get around to uploading an image here again chack out tha allow comments option before you hit the submit button....

As far as the freedom of speech goes... I used it constructively.... unlike you.... and within the guidelines of dA where it comes to constructive criticism.

I really don't care what your problem is... ans I am not about to get into it further with you.... Good luck Sistah.... and goodbye!!!!

RufusShinra4179 In reply to ZooFractals [2008-11-29 01:53:37 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Raven and I didn't meet through dA. This really has nothing to do with the sisterhood you refer to but to a friend worrying about another and not wanting them to be hurt.

RyuRaven In reply to ZooFractals [2008-11-29 01:51:08 +0000 UTC]

I'm not your sister, that's for sure. So don't call me sister. I've used the advanced criticism option for my deviations many times. In fact, I use it for most of mine. However, she didn't use that. She allowed comments for the simple pleasure of having comments. Some people like to hear how some other people enjoy their art. It would've been just fine and I wouldn't have said anything if you had just offered that first bit of criticism and left it alone, but then you kept adding more and more stuff that you thought was wrong with it when she told you anyway that she was happy with the coloration of the two women.

By the way, I did use my comments for constructive criticism. I used it to tell you that she was happy with it the way it was and that you kind of ignored that. It's like the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it? Maybe you need to think about whose feelings you'll hurt when they're really really trying instead of picking out every little thing that's wrong with an image. That makes some people feel like crap, but you probably don't care about that part.

By the way, I have no problem. Once again, don't call me sister. ^_^ Good bye and good riddance, mister Zoo person.

The mood of the girl at the bottom of the staircase in comparison to the girl climbing contrasts nicely. I like how the step-sister (I think that's the step-sister, right?) is black and white and the rest is in color. Nice job, sis!

^_^ Yep, she's the stepsister. I'd considered having her sitting there literally under a dark cloud pouring heavy rain just on her but that seemed a little clichéd so I figured the black clothes would be better.

Thank you.
