I think the background is great. Very simple. Watch Disney's "Mary Poppins". If you will look during the "cartoon" sections, the backgrounds are very muted as well. Look at many of the great painters. The backgrounds often are nothing but washes of color to "nudge" the viewer a bit.
Great job. I'm really enjoying your gallery and would love to see these as colored pieces.

Oh, and you should check out old movies like "Meet me in St. Louis" and the original "Little Women" for clothing study. Great costuming in those.
