The PoD is during the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, when there is a much larger, secondary explosion at the plant which spews a cloud of highly radioactive dust throughout much of eastern Europe. The Belarusian and Ukrainian SSRs are declared exclusion zones by the Soviet government, though not every portion of these territories is irradiated to the point of uninhabitability. Nevertheless, the Soviet Union orders mass evacuations of the two SSRs, mostly to Russia, though millions take the opportunity to move west.
The radiation cloud forced much of Europe and the Middle East into economic depression, as people were ordered to shelter in place while the fallout was cleared. Economic activity ground to a halt and many businesses failed. In the Middle East, the oil industry slowed down considerably, causing shockwaves throughout the world. The strain of the disaster pushes the Soviet Bloc over the edge, leading to the rapid fall of communism in the Soviet world. A post-Soviet Eurasian Federation rises in place of the USSR, while its communist puppets topple one by one in violent revolutions.
The Eurasian Federation is run by billionaire industrialists who took control of former Soviet state industries, and the powerful Russian mafia. It maintains a hostile attitude towards the West, which it blames for pushing the Soviet Union into oblivion during the late 1980s. Eurasia maintains many of the old Soviet Union’s military assets and geopolitical strength.
Turkey, devastated by the radiation from Chernobyl, fell apart in civil war in the 1990s. Though the Islamic fundamentalist opposition to the government failed to take power, the new government is one which has taken in many of that movement’s supporters and wishes to reclaim the greatness of the Ottoman Empire as the center of the Islamic world. This puts it at odds with the Iranian and Saudi governments, though the Turkish State has leveraged its geopolitical power masterfully and has eclipsed both.
Though the United States emerged from the Cold War as the winner and master of the world, it has inherited a large mess. Europe is reeling from a post-Chernobyl depression, which led to a “second Marshall Plan” dedicated to saving Europe. While it did save Europe, it led to major deficit spending by the American government, which has contributed to high inflation which has plagued the country since the 2000s.
Under a populist, non-Chavez government, Venezuela has taken full advantage of its petroleum reserves, taking in many former Soviet petroleum engineers and taking advantage of the Middle East’s oil slump. Much closer to the Eastern World, has allowed it to challenge American influence in Latin America and is planning on selling its oil in gold, bolivars and RMB. The Venezuelan state owns natural resources but otherwise allows capitalism. The sudden rise of Venezuela has turned America’s attention from Europe and Asia to the Americas.
China survived the turmoil of the 1990s and has emerged as a major world power, one which has a lukewarm relationship with the United States. The post-Chernobyl depression did not hit Asia, as the radiation cloud missed it, though it did slow down somewhat due to the oil crisis. This allowed China to continue its ascent to becoming workshop of the world, although it has competition from India and the ASEAN bloc.
With America largely withdrawing from ASEAN has become a more cohesive bloc in opposition to growing Chinese power. Indonesia and Thailand are the most powerful members of the bloc, though the rest are catching up.
India is another rising power in the east, seeking to forge its own path after its friendship with the Soviet Union gave it nothing. It wishes to supplant China as the world’s workshop.
