Description A few days ago, I located the daytime roost of a pair of Great Horned Owls. I have been watching and photographing them for the past four days. This is the female (the larger) of the pair. She is about eight to ten inches taller than her mate. I was fortunate enough to hear them both vocalize, and watch them take flight. Unobstructed opportunities to photograph wild Great Horned Owls are few and far between, so I'm very happy with my photographs. Great Horned Owls are powerful predators that hunt almost exclusively by night. These birds can take incredibly large prey, sometimes as big as great blue herons, red-tailed hawks, fox, skunk, porcupines, marmots, and even smaller species of owl. As absolutely nothing hunts healthy adult Great Horned Owls, they are indeed - - apex predators.

After waking up at the crack of dawn for almost two weeks straight to look or an owl roost, I finally found this one. I'm not trying to be rude, but I would not consider it luck.

Oh very true. I wish there were more forests around where I am. I also wish that my camera didn't break.

Great capture! It was interesting to read that they don't build their own nests, but use nests alerady built, mainly hawks nests. I read that they can take prey up to Great Blue Herons, now that is bad ass!

hahah yeah it is!

They're so lazy when it comes to nesting. I've seen them shove the owlets into some tiny nests.

You seem to have its attention. Their diet does not include nature photographers?

Beautiful shot of a magnificent bird! It appears from this perspective that you are shooting from almost a level position (meaning hillside, tree-climbing or pole-camera). Days of work and what a great reward!
