Description This is challenge 30. Under the Rain. They are Eliwood and Ninian from Fire Emblem 7 (GBA game).

I love the background on this one, I was mucking around with various ideas on how to do the tree (I tried editting a tree stock photo into in at one time), but in the end I drew in a tree and used various filters through the shading.

I pulled out a long unused and long forgotten (for me at least) shading style for this pic. Its a hard/soft shading style that uses a single colour for both highlighting and shadows - you change the layer style to get the different effects... might make a tutorial on it sometime...

The rain in this pic was done by clicking lots of little dots all over a clean layer and then using a motion blur filter, then duplicating the layer a couple of times. The trees in the background were paint brushes that I found in the toolbar when I was actually looking for something else -they're right at the bottom if you want to use them.

Yeah there was quite a few, but most of them were for the background, I only used 4 shading layers and two base layers for Ninian and Eliwood (then there's 2 layers for the rain, 4 for the tree and I don't know how many for the grass and trees in the distance). So yeah, your guess is absoloutely correct XD

Well... that's about Mmm... 20-ish layers or something. XD

I use about 14 tops when I had photoshop...
But this is really good, I loves it... and it's really well done.

Actually it's 32 layers (I counted them and discounted the hidden ones and ones I should've merged), there's about 3 layers for Ninian's shawl... thingy, so that makes the character layer count up to 9.

I usually have a lot layers in a pic, depending on the complexity of lineart and colouring style I decide to use, but I usually have around 30 layers (Because I just do VERY simple backgrounds unlike this one)

Nah, I don't use masks, I use the marquee tools to temporarily mask things when I'm shading.

holy crap that's a lot of layers...

But hey they were all worth it.
I wish I used that many... But since I color so quickly... and have merged layers most of the time... XD

The class I took a year ago with Photoshop my instructor got me into masking so that's why I asked~ XD
The marquee tool... used to be my fave when I was doing schoolwork... @_@ <33

Yeah, it was a huge as file too (only because I did the pic so damn big )

Yeah, I usually colour fairly quickly ^_^, the shading on the characters only took a little over 2 hours, the rest of the time was spent messing around with the background...

I don't even know how to mask (I'm self-taught, with tutorials and experimentation... might be why I spent more time experimenting than doing...)

Actually I have, I've beaten all modes except Hector's Hard Mode (I've stopped working on getting the conversations until I've beaten HHM)

Usually when I get conversations, I don't keep them, I just get them and then restart the levels so I can get as many convos as possible.

Then you'll know that Ninian doesn't die.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!

At the end of the game, Ninian and Nils go back to their home through the Dragons gate.....UNLESS Ninian and Eliwood have an A level support before Ninian dies. After the game, when she's resurrected, she chooses to stay with Eliwood knowing she won't live as long in the human realm as she would in the dragon realm because the atmosphere and air have changed too much, meaning she'll age like a normal girl instead of a dragon.
