Description "Reactor destroyed, self-destruct sequence initiated in T-90 seconds. All personnel please evacuate the mine immediately."

***

After being a Descent fan for so long, I couldn't resist the urge to get my hands into this and come up with my own version of the culminating, climatic, yet relieving moment after you finally find exit with 5 seconds left on the countdown... For those of you who have played Descent, you know what I mean and I hope I captured the point I meant to capture with this scene... For those of you who don't, then you've missed out.

DAMN you caught it perfectly.

I also might comment that that is the best rendering of a Pyro (of any model) I've yet seen, in my opinion. Nicely done!

lawl
thumbnail size was enough to think "self-destruct sequence initiated in T-90 seconds"

the best thing was when u flew the wrong way so close to the exit, turned around and still managed to get to the exit - awesome

thanks for the artwork

i think i'll get a new joystick and search for descent2

my old one has a strange plug called """"gamePort"""" which isn't supported any more as it seems

no really, tried everything, even USB adapter but it just wont work

maybe WINGMAN just brought some new up2date joysticks on the market in the last 10 years xDDDD

maybe xD

best wishes for the new year

Check out D2X-XL Google it if you don't know what it is. Basically open-source D2 that runs OpenGL.

Hey no problem man, and I know just what you mean with that exit thing. I hated it when the Guidebot would just zip ahead of you in a maze of corridors, and left you stranded, wondering where the heck he went... All while the timer just slowly keeps on counting you down.

Ever tried shooting a guided missile up the exit? lol!

...Nevermind, I looked it up on Wikipedia...

27 levels...every level ending with you destroying a reactor and escaping back to the start...

I gotta get this. Found a ton of copies on Half.com

(I think I remember some kids playing this on a computer at school a long time ago...they never let me play...)

I've only played Descent: Freespace! What Descent game is this from?

...And please tell me where I can find it!

what renderer did you use? (i use 3dsmax 8) I found that the default scanline render renders effects like lens and combustions with a lot less time and virtually hardly and loss.

If memory serves me correctly I believe I rendered this on MentalRay with Advanced Lighting Overrides on materials to give the explosion more of a punch...

Groxx [2006-02-17 17:00:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh man... I saw this in your gallery, and my brain just screamed "DESCENT!!!". Commenting was required, as was checking out the mod
Pushing past the "omgDescent" part of my mind... for later renders, watch the engine light (the only time it would be visible over the wing is due to the camera aperature, and it wouldn't look like that), and I'm never much of a fan of zoom-blurs (though THANK YOU, it's not over-done) Other than that, it looks great

Descent was one of my "original" games, and I think it's primarily responsible for me being the geek I am today

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

s2f In reply to Groxx [2006-02-21 13:19:31 +0000 UTC]

HAHA!!! If your brain screamed that, then that means I did my job well... I'm happy now hehe

And about the engine light, yeah I know what you mean, originally it didn't have it, but I decided to add it so that it would show that this dude is friggin going fast as hell, you know? As if he's got his afterburners at 200% power... But I know what you mean, no worries, thanks for the pointer anyway

Yeah I played Descent I when I was like 12, then I got Descent II When I was like 14, and just like two weeks ago I found Descent III and got it ... Damn I'm a geek too! LMAO!!!

Well fren' thanks a lot for the comment\input

oh yes, this reminds me of all those times in D2 i was panicking to find an exit before the whole installation went up... needless to say, a couple of times i wasn't quite lucky enough, and there went those weapons

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

s2f In reply to Star-F1ghter [2006-01-03 02:55:55 +0000 UTC]

YEAH MAN, I know what you mean, dude, when I played this game I was a little kid, I remember once I got soo godamn stressed out finding the exit (and the damn guide bot would just come back to find me, look at me, and get lost)... Dude... I couldn't sleep that night, my heart was rushing like crazy... Lol, yeah I GOT INTO the games... Hehe... But yeah.. I also lost a bunch of good weapons...

BUT, hey, if the scene reminded you of those times, then that means I did my job correctly!!! Haha, now I'm happy

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Star-F1ghter In reply to s2f [2006-01-03 10:24:43 +0000 UTC]

good thing that once when i lost my weapons in a level, it was already the point when i got the other type of lasers... super laser i think, but i still lost all the others, and only had that overcharging weapon. I still remember how i died there, surrounded with robots shooting from all directions, and the guidebot just fooling around as usual, i did manage to find the right direction at the last seconds, but at that time, it was just too late and i was fried when the reactor blew up.

sadly i can't play this game again, since i was borrowing it from my friend at that time, and we also used to play it together at his place. great times those were.

s2f In reply to OpenGL [2005-12-28 15:29:03 +0000 UTC]

It was originally blurred in max, but I gave it a LITTLE bit of radial blur on PS to soften it up a bit... But 90% of the blur you see there is all Max

This is a great render. Love the effects.

Haha, I know what you mean, yeah Descent was also the light of my day way back when... And indeed, since they don't make games like that anymore is why I'm so exited to work on this project, ... Speaking of which, I remember that once I asked you if D2 works on XP and you told me unfortunately not... Well... I found this program that makes it work, of course, you're gonna need the actual game, but if you still have it and wanna play it again, lemme know I'll give ya the link...

Thanks a lot for the comment man! Glad you liked it

s2f In reply to Serve [2005-12-28 16:23:19 +0000 UTC]

Nah it's not DosBox... Its something specifically made for D2...

Hold up ill give ya the link [link]

Just download it and extract into your main D2 folder... Then just run D2 like how you normally would...
