Description
An extinct Centrosaurine from Asia, the Oligocene superceratopsian Lophoceras was a powerful herbivore that could uproot trees and grew as large as 65 feet and weighed 25 tons. A relative of both Rubeosaurus and the more distant Sinoceratops, Lophoceras had the largest frill of any centrosaurine, and oddly the frill had no fenestra, a possible defensive adaptation against Megataurus horridus, the largest theropod carnivore that ever lived. Lophoceras died out during the Miocene, when climate changes and more advanced ceratopsines took its place and when large Tyrannosaurines began evolving saber-tusks to penetrate hard bone.
