Description Mongolia: The Edge of the Gobi: Present Day.

A Female Ankylomantarx, commonly called a Juggernaut, heads to the sands of the dunes to lay her eggs. weighing over six tons, she is 40 feet long and covered in armor over a foot and a half thick. her tail is covered with spikes and so are her shoulders. Just like her ancestor, Ankylosaurus, she is a gentle herbivore.
However, as she begins to dig, she does not realize she is being watched. A young Bull Vastatotyrannus rex sinensis is watching her every move. Heavily armored too, he is close to twenty tons in weight and over 70 feet long. his saber tusks flash in the light shining between the trees. they are 5 foot weapons of mass destruction; perfect for piercing armor, flesh, and bone.
As she continues to dig, he charges from the trees. Nearly too late she turns and bellows. The two combatants halt, sizing each other up. The V. rex lunges, and his prey swings her head away, swiping at her attacker with her enormous tail club. the weapon barely misses his snout, and he lunges again, aiming for her back. she tries to stab him, and grazes his snout, drawing blood.
Who will win this duel to the death? a desperate mother-to-be or a bloodthirsty hunter with the intelligence of a gorilla? only the sands can tell as the descendants of Tyrannosaurus rex and Ankylosaurus face off as their ancestors did 65 million years ago.

This was an earlier version of Vastatotyrannus and the finalized version of the ankylosaur Juggernaut. both were done for "Dinosaurs of the Present". the finalized V. rex can be seen in my gallery. feel free to make an end to the duel or another version as you see fit, but please ask my permission first.

the saber-tusks are anti-armor weapons; thick and powerful for inflicting fatal wounds on very dangerous armored prey. juggernaut's spiky tail has become less so with current drawings. as for the spines on V. rex, they are for communication and display.

That tail must be immensely heavy; considering the whole animal is about forty feet long, putting it in perspective, that spiked club is enormous. How is it able to lift such a bulky tail at all, and how does it keep those spikes from getting damaged when it isn't waving the thing in the air like that? I can't imagine this creature would be able to keep it's tail off the ground all the time. Those spikes would be dragging on the ground everywhere it went getting damaged.

Ankylosaur tails are heavily muscled at the base and have bony, interconnecting rods for stiffening the tail from about halfway down all the way to the club. Balancing that tail is no problem for a creature that size, even if the club is wider than a washing machine. the spikes are long like that due to the horny keratin sheath that covers them, doubling their length. any that get broken usually heal up unless infection sets in.

Very nice!! I'm jealous of all that scale-work! And those teeth!

thank you. V. rex is a nasty giant predator built for punching through armor. those teeth are built for breaking things. i did all those scales too in around the same timespan of 3 hours nonstop. just wait until i put in the raptors, carnotaurs, and others. then you will get to see some of my more bizarre and nasty looking predators and herbivores.

I like it, but in reality, long tusks like that break easily, and I know of no way they could take armor unless they were made out of titanium alloy and such. Only telling you because I know you like realistic things.

that's why i came up with the tusk enamel crystalizing and condensing to further harden them. V. rex tusks are not like those of a sabertooth cat. they are thicker, more like the tusks of a mammoth. very dense, quite sturdy.

I guess that makes sense, although I'm guessing they have to be relatively blunt at the tips.

yeah. they're not as sharp as an allosaur's tooth, but the thickness of the teeth and the bite force involved are enough that they can smash in bone and pierce vital organs. the cool thing is, if those saber-tusks do break, the V. rex can grow them back in a few months.

Ooh! Raptors!!! I love raptors!! I need to draw some....

Oh, and just for grins, V. rex would make a fantastic battle mount.

Wait till you see the 20 foot Gorgoraptors and the 35 foot long Tyrannoraptors, both as smart as chimps. as for a battle mount V. rex is very cool, and in my story 120 foot long T- rex named Thundertooth serves as the mount for elf prince Aeyden Wolffang, the cousin of Kaine Dragonheart.

Ooooh...now those raptors sound way beyond awesome!

120 feet huh? I would not want to go up against that.... Just to be sure, the big guy is on the good guy's side, yes?

Yes, Thundertooth is loyal too the side of good, and especially Prince Aeyden.

Now that's cool!

Only....how would one manage to get up on top of him?

i wondered the same thing, so i came up with the idea of tyrannosaurs, spinosaurs, carnosaurs and other large theropod mounts in Kairegorn lowering themselves down and letting their riders climb up and step on their powerful arms to boost themselves into the saddles behind the animals' necks. if you think its difficult getting up onto a theropod dinosaur, just wait 'till you see how hard it is to climb onto a 1000 foot long behemophant or titanodactyl shark with a 1300 foot wingspan.

if you think that's big, the Hellwinder will send shudders down your spine. imagine a salamander 1200 feet long with razor sharp teeth and an immunity to magic and dragon fire. they are in the works and i will post pics. i'll also post Ryffshod, enemy, then ally to Kaine and Thorinen.
