Description Well, this is Magoo. He was second born of our litter. Magoo was the first to open his eyes.

Edit: The image originally is 6x6inches.

With this one, alot of experimentation happened. First, lacking softer lead, I attempted to use charcoal pencils. I achieved darkness, but it was messy. By halfway through, the drawing was looking fairly pathetic. A trip across the border to a real art store, found me with 4b and 6b lead, holders, sharpener and all. I also picked up a white charcoal and white prismacolor verithin pencils. I was one happy girl with my bag of pencils! (talk about easy to please? heh) The charcoal is very nice under certain conditions, the verithins were hopeless mixed with existing lead. The image began to recover. The reference was a photo I took, the fingers from yet another photo and shading from the live model of my hands.

Edit: Utterly dissatisfied with my results, and having reworked it twice only to realize that the paper is completely inappropriate for the soft, grainless shading I was going for...I brought this piece into photoshop to soften and blend a little further. I just couldn't leave be! I also realized that the crappy scanner really shows itself with the dark drawings. Time to invest in a new one!

Thanks to for inspiring me to darken it further with the pencils!

I can't say I am very happy with it, but it was a learning project and boy did I learn alot!
I hope you enjoy it!

90lb paper, hb, b, 2b, 4b, 6b pencils, mechanical. 4b and 6b charchoal pencils, along with a white charcoal pencil. Blending stump, tissue paper, cotton swabs and qtips. Kneaded eraser.

This is lovely, you have a great talent! The only thing I suggest here is that you mark the black harder, to add more contrast, remember that contrast is very important because it sort of boosts and gives that life to your pieces. Anyway, beautiful cat

wow i like the way you drew the fur it's so realistic, i tried several times to draw fur but sadly failed . what kind of technique did you use when you drew this?

Oh goodness, this image was nearly a disaster. This was my first attempt at attaining a true black from my materials. As mentioned I tried a number of things, and the end result was a combination of. Though with fur, I tend to treat it like hair, looking for shadows and highlights, finding the individual strands and recognizing that it tends to be fuzzy or blurred instead of defined. I went back many times to put in strands again and then blend them in again. It was...frustrating! But worth it.

Thank you He's such a pretty kitten, I think I spent the first few weeks of his life looking at him as he stared up at me and saying "Awww.." *heartmelt* every time!

Maria is such a talented young lady. I love her work. To bring a smile to her face is hardly reward enough for sharing such beautiful work with us!

Heh, the terror part has begun. From hardly walking to scaling great heights in a week! Those little sharp nails and teeth! Still sooo sweet. Getting lots of photos, my next I think I'll use my new skills but play it a little safter! After doing Puppy Love and First born, I wrongly assumed I'd nail this one too.

Don't be too hard on yourself though, it's a great piece of art. Don't forget that we as viewers have no idea what you pictured in your mind before you started, only you do. To all of us, you nailed it!!!

I can see areas where I almost got it solid, I'm going to work a little more on this one and see if I can't fix up some of those blotchy areas I'm seeing. Your Oh Johnny just keeps edging me onwards!

It was a tough project to begin with, all that dark fur and black background..a challenge for me, but made only worse by all that experimentation. Also, I usually scan my work in, so I can view it on the computer. Somehow this clears up that artist block I have so I can fix errors before its too late. I've tried turning the book all around and moving around the room, but the scan is much more effective for me. I refused to scan this one in, and only too late saw where my mistakes were. Heh. Mistake mostly, I titled his head further then it was, which threw off alot of the composition.

Thanks for the comments!
