Description

Seen at the exhibit, Sharks, in the American Museum of Natural History. I know I've been to that exhibit before, but I had to come back since I found out I forgot about this little guy and I had to get a photo of it (glad I did).

This is the smallest shark ever known today, measuring up to 7.0 inches (20 cm) long. This shark's belly and fins are covered in bioluminescent photophores. The big eyes help this little shark see in low light conditions. Surprisingly, this hark eats krill. Its home is located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coasts of Venezuela and Columbia. Despite being listed as Least Concern, this small fry is often discarded as bycatch and also killed by deep-sea trawling. One interesting fact is that this shark lives up to a quarter mile (which is 440 meters) below the surface. Females tend to give birth to to 2-3n pups.
