Yeah, I learned that from a show called Everything You Didn't Know About Animals, from Nat Geo Wild. That episode was "Tigers, Rhinos, & Naked Mole Rats," and the facts I learned from there about rhinos are these:
1. Rhinos used to be varied in species, having one species hornless and the largest mammal on Earth! But now there are only five species of rhino: The White Rhino (the biggest rhino species, with two subspecies: southern (most abundant rhino species) and northern (extremely rare and endangered, with only very few left, mostly in captivity!)), the black rhino, the Indian rhino, the Javan rhino (Very rare), and the Sumatran rhino (smallest rhino species).
2. Rhinos are the second biggest land mammal, after the elephant.
3. Rhinos are the only animal alive to have horns on their noses.
4. Thanks to the black market (Boo!), Rhino horn is the most expensive and valuable material.
5. Rhino horn is actually made of keratin, the biggest horn was 5 feet long.
6. The core of the horn is made of melanin, which keeps the horn intact.
7. Rhinos are more closely related to zebras and horses, and they have three odd toes.
8. Rhinos have the thickest skin of the animal kingdom.
9. Rhinos have skin that could heal their wounds quick.
10. Rhinos can sweat blood.
11. Rhinos have brains that weigh as heavy as a croquet ball.
12. A group of rhinos is called a crash.
13. Rhinos use their feces as a message, to get to know others (I know, it's gross. But it's true). They smell it to see who's who.
14. Rhinos have the strongest sense of smell in the animal kingdom.
15. Rhinos have oxpeckers, little birds that perch on their backs to eat ticks and other bugs on them, as back-up to help see for them because of their poor eyesight.
16. Rhinos are surprisingly friendly and playful (I know, shocking. I was surprised as you on that one). The little charge or close up may be them saying they want attention or to play. But still I would be careful with them if I were you...
17. Rhinos are sadly now one of the most endangered animals on Earth. But there is good news. If protected, Rhinos may look different in the future.
That's shocking and new rhino facts for ya. To find out more, be sure to check for the show in your tv or buy the show on DVD (shop.nationalgeographic.com/ng… ), if you can. Anyway, I hope you enjoy these facts and merry World Wildlife Day!
