Description Maybe, for just a minute more.....the underground can wait.

Yes, this was bound to happen. I thought 's "Momentary lapse" comic from her Handplates  series was both sweet and kind of sad, as we know how the young skeletons are going to be treated later.
All the bittersweet feels made me want to create something for that scene, and this is it. Still caught up in the rush of his paternal instincts, Gaster can't resist taking one of the young skeles and embracing both it and the fact that it's essentially his offspring. Figures he'd take the one that resembles him. : P   On the other hand,  it could explain why the young Papy is so heavily inclined to hugging and general physical contact with the scientist later, as well as why he's taller than Sans. Or more like, why Sans is unusually short. : /

For some reason, I have a headcanon that baby skeles make mewling sounds like kittens. : 3 sorta like this:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=z28DaQ…

And yes, that's his lab coat he's got Papyrus wrapped in. Every so often, these useless emotions surface and make you forget to keep things professional. Distract you from your agenda.

Unlike my previous digital artworks,  I actually started with a rough pencil sketch that I then enlarged a bit and drew over in SAI. You can see it in scarps, if you like.

If you aren't familiar with zarla's Undertale comic series Handplates, you might like to give it a try.

D'aw, thanks for the kind words!
I get this response for this drawing a lot. Even to this day, it pleasantly surprises me every time.
I had just wanted to let out my feels over the "Momentary lapse" comic (that all feels like so long ago, *sigh*), and ever since then, this continues to be one my most faved pieces. While every artist on DA hopes their pictures will be noticed and appreciated, I don't think I could have anticipated the positive reception this simple little drawing was going to receive. It means a lot to me.
So, thank you again. <3

This is adorable! I love it so much, but I have a very important question for you....

Is that Scotch tape he's using to tape up his glasses, or some kind of super-skeleton tape he designed for this specific purpose? These are important things, you know.

Haha, you'd have to ask Zarla, as I did get the tape thing from her Gaster designs. It's a

SageOfTheStars In reply to TheHunterOfEvil [2016-07-29 03:46:08 +0000 UTC]

Heh, makes me wonder if Gaster's gonna get more brutal (outside of experiments) with time.
Oh, and if she answers your question, could you tell me what she says? : 3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheHunterOfEvil In reply to SageOfTheStars [2016-07-29 03:58:30 +0000 UTC]

I will!
Honestly, I think the more brutal he gets, the better their escape/rescue will be and the more satisfying his death. That's the one good thing about really bad villains, is that they make good endings so much better.
Speaking of Gaster and endings, in the story I'm writing here on Deviant Art, I am going to be working Handplates into the story towards the middle, and if you want to check that out, you're more than welcome to. :3 #shamelesselfpromotion

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SageOfTheStars In reply to TheHunterOfEvil [2016-07-29 18:21:42 +0000 UTC]

People often seem to feel that way about villains. But to be honest, I don't really view Gaster as a villain, or at least a very
bad one. He is much more psychologically complex than the stereotypical villain, and the frequent guilt and wistfulness he keeps
displaying subtly don't seem to be traits of a cold-blooded person. I guess I just see him more as someone who tried to do
what he thought was the right thing and ended up making a lot of bad choices.

Cool. I've seen Handplates come up in fan literature here and there, such as Handplates Gaster making an appearance in this
chapter in this peculiar story.  www.fanfiction.net/s/11820109/…

Or this in-progress fanfic someone wrote about what would have happened if Gaster hadn't chosen "fight."

Did you... just quote Asriel in that title?

Oh my gosh now my heart hurts even more.

Edit: HOLY S*** I JUST REALISED IT'S LIKE THIS PAINFUL PARALLEL - JUST AS HOW ASRIEL KNEW THAT HE'D EVENTUALLY HAVE TO LET FRISK GO AND GO BACK TO BEING A SOULLESS, EMOTIONLESS HUSK OF A FLOWER (FOREVER), SO DOES GASTER KNOW HE'LL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO GIVE UP MOMENTS LIKE THIS AND GO BACK TO THAT COLD, EMOTIONLESS FACADE OF HIS. THEY BOTH KNOW (subconsciously or otherwise) THAT THIS IS PROBABLY THE LAST AND ONLY TIME THEY'LL EXPERIENCE THAT MOMENT OF LOVE, AND ONCE IT'S OVER THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO GO BACK TO THEIR OLD LIVES OF DESTRUCTION AND PAIN. AND MY GOD DOES THE THOUGHT HURT.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SageOfTheStars In reply to PeachyPuppyGirl30 [2016-07-20 22:37:30 +0000 UTC]

I did in fact quote Asriel with that title, and intentionally.

You're right on the mark, and then some. I figured using Asriel's quote would be fitting because just as Asriel
didn't want to let go of Frisk, knowing that once he did they'd have to part forever, Gaster knows that once he
finishes his embrace with his little one, he can no longer let himself have fatherly moments like these. If he kept doing it,
it would ruin the project and distract him from his goal. Interactions like these can only build attachment, after all.

I didn't realize the parallel between Asriel and Gaster goes even further than the hugging part. You make a very good point;
Gaster knowing he will have to return to his cold emotional state afterwards is very much like how Asriel knew he would soon
turn back into a flower. Both characters must go back to their unhappy lives of before.  Now I'm even happier I chose this title.

It does hurt to think about it.

Rogue123987 [2016-07-12 08:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Fun fact: When a child is very young (birth to around two I think) they need physical contact in order to survive. Because of this we have a natural instinct to hold our children whenever possible, for example: when we hold our children when feeding them from a bottle instead of sitting them on a table. A child that doesn't get enough physical contact will start starving to death, no matter how much they eat, and won't grow properly.

I can't help thinking this is why Papyrus is so much taller than Sans. Since their bodies were aged before they left the tubes Sans survived but since he never got any sort of monster contact he ended up really small.

SageOfTheStars In reply to Rogue123987 [2016-07-12 17:13:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've read about how important physical contact is to developing infants, and all kinds of
bad things go down if they don't receive enough of it. For example, I faintly recall reading somewhere that
children who had been raised with little physical contact in a certain orphanage were observed
to have mental disabilities later. It's amazing how such a simple thing can be so crucial to a person's ability to function.

Which also makes me wonder how the skelebros aren't mentally stunted, or how they survived at all,
given the circumstances they grew up in. If they weren't allowed to at least cuddle each other the way
they always do, I can't help but wonder how this would have affected them. Still, they only got introduced
to each other when they were already somewhat matured, when you'd think there would already be permanent damage....
Face it Gaster, you're a horrible parent. : P

I like your theory explaining the height differences between Sans and Papyrus. It would make sense, and
it makes my picture feel that more "valid." X 3

Rogue123987 In reply to SageOfTheStars [2016-07-15 22:54:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've heard about that orphanage too. I read a book called The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog which is collection of stories of children and young people this one phycologist (or is is phycaitrst, K can never remember the difference). One of his clients was a young girl who's mother was raised in one of those orphanages and was moved around a lot because at the time they thought it was bad for orphaned children to form attachments to their caretakers (their was a LOT of other, often even more damaging, backwards things they believed back then). Because of this her mother didn't have the instinct to hold her child when feeding her so her child started getting really thin. They managed to sort it out luckily, but it shows you how much effect these things can have.
It really is a mirical the brothers are as functional as they are under the circumstances.

SageOfTheStars In reply to Rogue123987 [2016-07-16 01:48:15 +0000 UTC]

Heh, glad they at least sorted it out in time.

A few years ago, I read about some guy in the early 20th century who was performing experiments meant to make an infant boy
afraid of....furry animals (Googling it, I see the experiment was known as Little Albert, after the boy). It's unknown how it affected
the boy in the long run, but I'm pretty sure such an experiment would be considered unethical today (for good reason).
I wonder if Gaster would try doing something like that with the skelebros. : P

By the way, how is the Handplates fic coming? I know I asked once before, but I know someone else who's also gotten hooked by it
and is eager for the next installment.

Rogue123987 In reply to SageOfTheStars [2016-07-16 12:35:12 +0000 UTC]

That does seem like something Gaster might do, though his research seems more in line with trying to make monsters stronger than any phycological experiments.

As for thhe Hamdplates fic, it might not update for a while I'm afraid, for a lot of reasons. I've been having some issues with my computer so I haven't been able to use it for a while so I need to get that sorted out firstly. I've also been busy with finishing some school work (I'm homeschooled so my holidays don't really line up with everyone else's a lot of the time), a drama workshop and my mum's been working tons to so we haven't had time to fix the computer. Aside from that I've just been having trouble with this one scene anyway and I'm not sure how to continue.

so, yeah, it might be a while. I feel kinda bad 'cause I know a lot of people are looking forward to the next update and I know how frustrating it can be to have to wait so long for an update.

I've decided to a break from writing it for a while to focus on anoughter project since I can't write my fic right now anyway. Plus, I don't need the computer for this other project since it's an original story and I need to create the world and caracters from scratch, not to mention that it's either going to be a cartoon or webcomic and I don't have the skills or reasorces to make one of those on my own for now.

SageOfTheStars In reply to Rogue123987 [2016-07-17 00:35:14 +0000 UTC]

That's okay, and perfectly understandable. I find it easier to wait for something if I know the reason for a hiatus.
Good luck with everything.

Oh man... Truly cute and adorable but yet sad, as you said. I'm sure that if Gaster did end up giving Papyrus a hug in the present, even after all the torture and pain he made him go through, Gaster would break down. Seems like you understand the situation Gaster is in in Handplates. He isn't the bad guy, he just doesn't have a choice. He HAS to do it for the sake of what Monsters need him to do. It's sad for the three of them, really...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SageOfTheStars In reply to RegiQOA [2016-07-12 04:43:09 +0000 UTC]

I know,  right?
I get the feeling it shows in my gallery, but I've got something of a soft spot for him. I find him an interesting character, but  you have to pay attention to the details in the comics, both visual and textual, in order to truly understand him. I don't see him as the "bad guy" either. Instead, I  see him as something of a tragic character. There's a kind of complexity and  sense of "humanity" to him that you don't see in just any fictional character, especially in a comic series. At least, that's how I see him.
