Description Okay, how do I explain this one?
As many of you may know, I am a huge fan of Bela Lugosi, famous for portraying count Dracula, but did you know he was supposed to play the Frankenstein monster too? He was set to star in the film, and Universal Studios quickly came up with this poster, and it has fascinated me for a veeery long time.

It's such a strange picture. Why is the monster 30 feet tall? Why is he shooting lasers out of his eyes? And why is he carrying the doctor as if he he was Fay Wray! But it's very detailed, and nicely made. I only wish I knew who made it! As I kept staring at the poster, I wanted to see what it looked like without the title and the infobox, so I started to paint over them. Then i removed the lightening bolts and the lasers, and here is the result.

What do you think?

one of the most interesting looking posters ever. I really want to see that make-up test footage they did with Bela Lugosi.

You and me both, buddy. Apperently it was shot at the set of Dracula's castle.

And as bizzarre as the poster is, I gotta say that I really love it in a way.

haven't heard that part but it doesn't surprise me.

I like the poster too, as art. if this was a real reflection of the actual film I think we'd have problems.

Funny how Bela Lugosi was rejected for the role, then Boris Karloff took and became a bigger star yet after all these years it the Lugosi version of the monster (from "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman") is the iconic version we all spoof to this day.

Maybe this was firstly intended for some other movie ... people seem dressed as in 1930' (they even wear spats! ), great city skyscrapers in the background (not a castle or a village - makes one wonder what kind of a contemporary-futuristic idea would it be!), not to mention bloke does not look a bit like BΓ©la ... Well, he is green - and has laser eyes!!! - but BΓ©la's make-up was supposed to be extremely hairy ...

Exactly. It's such a wonderfully strange poster. Bela's makeup included a big matted wig, and a wax, or clay like face. This poster was without a doubt thrown together in extremely early stages of production, when Florey was still directing. Read the caption box, that's even more insane.

I first saw it on the documentary that came with the Frankenstein (1931) dvd, and it immediately caught my attention. Apperantly it was made in the early stages of production, when Bela still was the star.

And when you do find the right words, let me know So glad you liked it. ^^

Oh, wow, can you imagine getting a hold of the Original poster?

And yeah, doing soul searching just for that purpose!

I know what you mean! I mean, it's the poster of a movie that was never made! How cool is that? I wonder how many of them still exist.
