Description So, this is my alternative poster to Disney's Bolt.
Anyone familiar with the production story would recall that it was Chris Sander's Idea and movie; when John Lasseter changed the direction/look of the movie. And Chris doesn't even get credit in the "Art of.." book! I wonder what the original movie would've looked unchanged, even though Bolt was one of Disney's best films in a while.. Anyways, I tried my best to get the look right from the few concept art pieces I've saved on my computer.

It would have been fucking interesting. And better if they decided to make more adult, first adult Disney animated movie. Bolt tbh creeped me out at times years ago, it may pay a tribute to action movies but some extremely silly scenes like when Bolt is hungry and blames the cat for poisoning him, it doesn’t make it much better. :/ But yeah, without C. Sanders’ leaving there would not have been How to Train Your Dragon most likely

And if hadn't left Disney, he and Dean Deblois would've never defected to DreamWorks and made the How To Train Your Dragon movies.

Every dark cloud has a silver lining.

Pixar guru John Lasseter and his fellows from Pixar reviewed Sanders project back in 2006. Apparently, they weren't happy with what they saw. Lasseter came with suggestions to improve the story, but Sanders refused and was therefore replaced. There is no room for refusal to collaborate and the movie industry.

Ultimately, this was a good thing. Chris Williams and Byron Howard did an amazing job with Bolt, and Lasseter gave the film what film critics called "the pixar touch". I think Sanders idea would have ended up being something similar to Meet the Parents or Chicken Little, ie. not so good.

Nice art though

They probably made the right decision, but the early concept art looked so promising..

And thanks

Don't be so hard on Mr. Lassetter.

After all, he's been one of the folks responsible for bringing 2D animated features back to Disney and helping the company get back on track following Eisner's reign of terror, among other things.

Trust I'm a huge fan of Lassetter and P.I.X.A.R, and I love how he's turning Disney Animation around, and back to its roots.

I just think it's a bit unfair for Sanders, considering it was his idea and movie and after being kicked off it not getting any mention.

The mystery of what could've been.

From what I've heard, American Dog's story was eerily similar to that of Cars. Yet just for the sake of doing something different, Lasseter should've kept Sanders' version.

I will never forgive what Lassester did to this beautiful work of art of a project. But does anyone know if Sanders had considered American dog for Dreamworks?

I was also really angry when I heard Sanders had been taken off the project. Supposedly, John Lasseter didn't like "Lilo & Stitch" because it was one of the first movies to recieve a PG rating and because of the violence; he also couldn't grasp the concept of the whole alien thing and thought kids wouldn't be able to understand.

The reason, I think, he took Chris Sanders off the "American Dog", is because he didn't want another...mixed emotions, violent or unpredicable movie. I think "Lilo and Stitch" came out great though, there were some deleted scenes, I'm glad they took out though. So what can we say about "Bolt" now? I think it turned out great! With Sanders on or off the project, we'll never know if it would be a better movie.

Great picture by the way

Well, I guess that would be a reason to change it. But with all the debate about the subject it's hard to tell the actual story..

defeatedlikeyou [2009-06-16 01:17:13 +0000 UTC]

I doubt it...the reasons that I heard for why it was changed were essentially that it was the same story as Lilo and Stitch, just with different characters. Chris Sanders may be a great artist, but apparently not a great writer. Personally I'm glad that they changed it, Sanders' original story and characters were just plain weird.

SamiShahin-Art In reply to defeatedlikeyou [2009-06-16 06:07:06 +0000 UTC]

Well I hear ya with all that. But for one thing; Bolt's basic storyline is actually ripped from Disney's own straight-to-DVD 101 Dalmatian 2: Patch's London Adventure. And I just don't understand why they changed the characters and direction so drastically! They could have tone it down or something.. anyways, my opinion is that Bolt was Disney's best in many years, but at the end it just feels like second-rate PIXAR rather then original Disney. Though seeing my own artwork I can see that Bolt would have more mass appeal..

Lilo and Stich, huh? That's a pretty big insentive for me to pick up the DVD. Even if Sanders dosen't get any credit.

Which makes it less of an insentive...

The movie was really funny and entertaining, but I can only imagine how much better it would've been with Chris' quirkiness and character design.. but I hear ya, I understand the dilemma.
