Description This is a basic stamp making tutorial for GIMP

=================================================
The download file [link] is a Stamp Kit containing these resources:

Stamp.gif --------------- the finished stamp
demo.xcf ---------------- a demo file containing all the files used in the tutorial
readymades.xcf ------ a file containing some readymade backgrounds & overlays
stamp_border.xcf ---- a stamp templet for this tutorial
stamp_kit.txt ---------- a readme file
tutorial.jpg ------------- the tutorial itself

=================================================

GIMP is a free graphics package which can be downloaded from this [link]

If you are interested in animating your stamp there is a basic animation tutorial at this [link]
.............................................................
How was it for you? Did the earth move?
Some feedback might help improve the experience next time
If there is a next time

.............................................................
Non-premium members can use stamps by posting thumbs in their Journal, Artist Comments etc

.............................................................
The GIMP
.............................................................

it has a number of features that recommend it

it is powerful
it is regularly updated
it is well supported
it is maintained for free by dedicated skilled programmers
it is FREE - totally free - it costs NOTHING to give it a try - it still costs nothing if you decide to keep it
I use it for all my graphics needs, from designing (stamps, pages etc) to photo editing & manipulation
It does everything I require

the downside
you need to learn how to use it to get the best out of it (but you can be up and running in a few minutes)
it doesn't have the 'streeet cred' of something thats cost hundreds of your currency units (though it does work just as well)

how do u make a stamp with moving text on it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandgroan In reply to JC-Rose [2014-04-26 19:57:32 +0000 UTC]

you need to make a .gif with layers
each layer is a frame of the movie
there are tutorials that explain how to do it
it isn't too hard when you know how

I can't understand this, I'm just trying it a very simple route but whenever I submit it, it says I have to put a picture over it, in turn causing me to lose the text, please help!

If you look in the right hand column of this page you will see a Download File button
The button will download a file onto your computer that contains all the files for this demo, including the 'stamp border'

I hope that answers your question, Hisui

Thia tutorial does assume you already have 'theGimp' graphics program (it is free and you can download it from the Internet)

It also assumes that you know the basics of using the graphics package (there are tutorials for using 'theGimp' here on deviantArt and elsewhere on the Web)

You need to know how to use 'layers', 'transparency' & 'fonts' - just take it a step at a time

I checked out the stamps you have done & you've made a good start - don't give up - you'll be doing really great stuff very soon if you keep at it

How do i get just the border? my image always goes over the stamp and i cant get the border.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandgroan In reply to xxBrandy [2012-08-18 08:55:03 +0000 UTC]

I'm quite willing to help - but I'm not sure I understand your question

Try this:

Make sure your layer for the stamp border is above all the other layers
Then select the stamp border layer
Select inside the stamp border with the 'fuzzy select' tool
Find the 'select' tab and press 'invert'
Now go to each layer apart from the stamp border layer & press 'delete'
This will remove those extra bits around the edges
When this is done find the 'select' tab and press 'none'
Now save your file as an .xcf
Merge the layers down and re-save as a .png or a .gif

Does that help?

You could also check that your layers have an alpha channel
(The alpha channel is what supplies transparency to a layer)
Go to the 'layers' tab and 'add alpha channel' if any layer needs an alpha channel

If you are still having problems let me know - I am pleased to help

I'm definitely going to use this as well to help me make a stamp from scratch.
Thanks for your great tutorials.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandgroan In reply to ayame18 [2011-02-28 11:35:31 +0000 UTC]

The layers in the readymades.xcf will give you some effects to try out.
You can copy a layer you like & paste it into another image, such the stamp you are working on.
Once you see how it works you will be able to make your own effects, like coloured overlays using the blend tool for example.

Be sure to upload your stamp to dA & send me a link - I'll try to leave you a comment
