I'M NOT DEAD! HONEST!

You can blame my shoddy network connection for my lack of updates.

And you can blame Macman for getting me overly-addicted to Avatar.

Yeah, I got him started on it, and then he got me hooked (like, beyond mild fandom). And so I, being the scribble-artist that I am, decided to draw something cute. Because cute > you.

And please excuse the title. My muse went on strike after I did this.

I let my brain go into hyper-analytical mode (Avatar is a lovely show to do this with, considering it's such a rich world - the plot is so tight and quick-moving, though, that we don't have time to explore it. And I ph34r for the games comming up...they promise even less on the rich exploration front, given the screens). And I got to thinking to myself, "Why is Katara's hair always so neat?" I mean, brushing your hair in the morning makes sense. Pulling it out of your face makes sense. But to do all those elaborate braids and loops and rolls? That makes no sense. She's on the world's biggest roadtrip, on a flying bison with absolutely NO windbreak (can you say "windblown hair"?), and she does this elaborate thing with her hair. Makes NO SENSE.

And so I got to thinking of clever ways she'd get her hair done. We all know Aang can braid (he made a necklace out of fishing line for her when she lost hers, remember?), so I figured, well, why not? It'd give him an opportunity to stick his nose in her [insert-favorite-exotic-scent-here] hair...come on, you know animé girls always manage to smell like some sort of expensive shampoo even in the middle of a war. And plus, it's cute.

Sokka is still complaining about how long it's taking, though...I figure he'd either be making kissy faces and loud sucking noises in their general direction, or complaining. And I absolutely love picture-speech bubbles (they say so much with so little), so I just had to put that clock in there. And I figure I couldn't leave out Appa and Momo (though I could leave out Appa's saddle), so they're just kinda hanging around back there.

And I did a freakin' BACKGROUND. With pine trees instead of cherry, because cherry trees in bloom are overdone, and the almighty pine tree is sorely underrepresented. That, and I just wanted to draw those little needles. I'm very proud of those branches in the foreground. And you can take the symbolism of pine trees however you like.

Then, upon discovering a rather nifty tutorial about "dynamic shading", decided to give that a try, too. So since the sun is pretty yellowy at midday (see Sokka's clock? ), the highlights (the few of them that there are) are neon yellow, and then the shadows are all blue and purple. And it looks a little TOO blue and purple if you ask me...yes, we must say that the rock they're sitting on is exteremely shiney and is reflecting Katara's dress, hm? Grass is kinda...mau. I want my grass brush from Photoshop... Aang's clothes are shaded all funny (should've made the shadows more brown, not orange).

And then the scanner went and pooped all over the colors. There are some mild green tones in Katara's hair, yes, but they don't look THAT green, ick. Her pants are too light, too, though that's partly my fault (though they looked darker when I was coloring them...). So yes, dynamic shading should NOT mean psychadelic...though if you get some of Sokka's cactus juice, it might look perfectly normal.

Know who takes the prize for being best drawn? Appa. Appa poons. Big, fuzzy lovable bison. *burries herself in the fur*
