Description
As I said when I submitted this sketch ... the signares were were mixed women that lived on the island of Gorée, in Senegal, their father was european and their mothers were slaves. They managed to get individual assets, status and powers in the hierarchies of the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Here is a quote, from the poem "Black Woman" written by Leopold Sedar Senghor, the first president of the Republic of Senegal :

'Pearls are stars on the night of your skin
Delights of the mind, the glinting of red gold against your watered skin
Under the shadow of your hair, my care is lightened by the neighbouring suns of your eyes.'
