Makalio is the brother of Moriarty . Though born only minutes apart, Makalio grew much stronger and faster than his little brother, who by appearance always seemed much younger than him; because of this, and since Makalio was technically born first, their father King Tsunga chose him as heir and future king. Since the beginning, he was a malicious and cruel lion, eager to manipulate any around him to get his every desire. His brother was of course his easiest target, and he took every strong emotion he felt out on him. It was a wonder that they continued to be so close, even to the end. Shortly before Makalio was crowned king, Moriarty succumbed to the illness that had grown worse with each passing day since they became teens. Although still heartless and cruel, it seemed Makalio was changed after this, becoming more somber and withdrawn. He ruled the pride in loneliness, though he never missed an opportunity to lash out on his poor, unsuspecting lionesses when his mood grew sour.
As for Makalio's strange red eye, the legend within the pride is that it was a mark of his evil soul, however, the true cause of it is unknown. He was born with two, perfectly normal blue eyes, that became bloodshot and red over time, eventually losing sight in the right one. It was certainly a menacing look, though.
