lol me too. have you tried carrying around a small mirror? when I need to do it, I take it upstairs to the big mirror in the bathroom, but if I'm traveling it's inconvienent.

I just had to come back and fave this! I've known about this phenomenon, but to be honest, I thought it was only me being a poor artist! It's actually nice to know that it's a "natural" thing, and after reading this I have actually started paying more attention to it (before I knew about it, and occasionally did flip my pictures, but it always brought me down so I tried to avoid it). Now instead I try to pay extra attention to it, both when I draw with my hand and ink on the computer! Hopefully I'll help me avoid, or at least lessen the effect, in the future!

Why on earth don't they teach this stuff in school?!?

Hmm... that's a really interesting idea! The only question is how to flip something traditional. Also, my brain will occasionally just do a mental flip back and tell me things are fine. Aurg, neurology.

SarahForde In reply to senshi-sun [2011-01-24 15:18:53 +0000 UTC]

These are traditional. I scan them and flip them. but I'm looking for a phone app that can let me do it faster

senshi-sun In reply to SarahForde [2011-01-26 02:16:53 +0000 UTC]

Ahh... okay. I guess I could flip over the paper and hold it up to the light. I'm also wondering if this could correct for eye bias (I've got an interned eye) or if I'd need to get someone else.

If you have a Mac, Photo Booth flips automatically.

That part about eye bias was random musing, you don't have to answer it.

sailortitan [2011-01-21 03:23:53 +0000 UTC]

It's a useful trick, but kind of inconvenient if you work traditionally. :-/ it takes FOR-EVAH to scan and flip, scan and flip. Personally, I don't think I could bring myself to bother unless it was like, a commission.

Maybe I should get a small mirror, though, That would be worlds more handy.

I've done this too before, it's really helped with my eyes, as well as my side portraits. I always do it to see if something looks off in my drawing.

I've actually known about this for a while. XD I pick up a lot of stuff by being left eye dominant, but right handed.

I still have trouble with my eyes looking correct though. ><

Saphiroko [2011-01-17 21:47:34 +0000 UTC]

Very cool trick! I used to do that when I really wanted a picture to look good - I would photocopy the drawing and mirror it in the machine. I also found that when working from references especially, it helped to turn the reference and your drawing upside down. That way, you're just seeing the shapes and lines instead of, say, a face. It forces your brain to see it differently, and copying a circle and lines is a whole lot easier than copying a face! Just some more tips ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SarahForde In reply to Saphiroko [2011-01-17 22:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah that's a great trick too! Once in a while I still have to do that with certain things like hands sometimes I find are easier to draw when I turn it a certain way.
