Omg, you made Near Canadian. Are you Canadian too (even though it says US on your profile)?

am i anywhere close to being right in saying that, in this, Near is dead as far as everyone else is concerned. i read the newspaper article and i started thinking...

Well, it's sorta hard to pick up on bc of the way i ended up cropping the pic, but yes and no. At the time the article was printed it was believed the entire River family was killed in the fire, in my lil' "fic". The incident report beside it dates from a couple days later, when the cleanup crew found the boy in the wreckage. I never included anything about how he ended up at the House.

oh! ummm, well yes actually. i do have quite a lot of sketchy character outlines and scraps of plot ideas lying around, and actually here in my gallery i have a few pictures and sketches of original characters i've been playing around with and developing. i think i also have a couple short stories on here somewhere.
that being said, i feel like i'm in a sort of long-term development stage right now. i'd love to publish work, but i feel that 1. my drawing is not yet good enough to publish and 2. my ideas are not yet developed enough to be able to gather into a coherent plot yet. right now i'm concentrating more on practicing, getting better, and just letting ideas come together in my head. in addition to that, i'm currently still in grad school, and so unfortunately drawing and writing is something i do on the side; it can't really be my first priority right now, so i don't have the time i would want to dedicate to a serious original work. i definitely see professional graphic novel or comic writing as something i might want to do in the future, once my style is more mature and solidified, and i have a stable career that i can depend on. i'm not in a particular hurry to be publishing comics, i'd rather take my time and feel like i did my own characters justice. with this, with fanart, it's not so much of a big deal, i guess. i can play around with styles and things because i'm not having to spend a ton of time inventing characters from scratch. this way, too, i'm more likely to get feedback, to figure out what works and what doesn't, both in terms of plotline and pacing, and in the drawing style. i see fandom as a really good place to practice fundamentals, basically, so that later, in 5 or 10 years when i'm ready to start putting my own stuff into a real story, i'm more confident and experienced in my work.
sorry, that explanation turned out way longer than i intended it to be!

I really love the concept you drew of Mello sending his picture back, with his own little letter to Near...That was, in my opinion, really touching, and it could show that Mello trusts Near with his face, and the fact that with him sending the photo...He's come to terms with the truth of everything, and is willing to do what he can, his last mission...I feel Mello kidnapped Takada in order to save Near...And sending back his photo with the message, he was in a way telling Near goodbye and to beat Kira...
Squeeee! I adore it! The little picture of himself and Mello drawn by Linda that he kept...Depicting a happier moment...Most likely a precious memory...
Also, really nice concept of Near's parents! Mommy and daddy look really nice, and if it was fire in which they went...Fire must have a deep, scarring meaning to Near, considering Mello left him in almost the same exact way...
Argh...My long post...Sorry, anyway, I love this picture! It's so sad, and touching, and amazing, at the same time!^^

and no need to apologize! i love long comments. i can never really gauge how well the meanings i try to put in are actually coming across to people, so it's really helpful for me when someone actually says what they made of it!

It's such a nice way you have to go so deeply inside a character's psichology ...and ok this may be the 3rd time I tell you the same thing-but it's true.
I should be working, instead of being here meditating on this picture, but it's nice to dig deep into details
Mello's note...How sad -and sort of friendly, still (you already knew I consider M friendly )
And, since the key has the same number Mello wrote on his photo..did he leave the photo in a safety box for N, being sure to die before him? That's even sadder.
(I love how you made the slight folding of the photo corner, but that's a minor detail).
How creepy the "Death" tarot, and how sad of him to keep it as a memo with the other papers.
How did you make each document details? I mean, did you write by yourself each text, using a different font, etc. or did you use some real articles as a reference, or something? They're perfect.
What else..Keep up the awesome work!

Um, close on the box thing--the box number is written on the note, so I kinda had it figured that Mello left both the photo and key with Halle or somewhere where Near would certainly find it, and left his book (Another Note) in the box for Near to read.
I did do the documents in photoshop as well, with textboxes and such...i did each of the paper pieces in this picture in a separate file, and then arranged them all in one big file and did some lighting and the 3d objects. with some of them, like the news clipping and the music, I used stock images of paper and layered them in to give my documents a more weathered look. Actually, writing the news article was the hardest part for me! News writing is so different from fiction writing :S I did sort of look over some news articles for ideas for wording, but I made up the text myself.
thanks! ^^

Great idea - great picture.

In my mental story, Near blacked out the eyes when he found out that there was a possibility of Kira killing only with a face, unsure of whether the power extended to drawings but unwilling to get rid of it. I always kind of imagine that before Near left the House he gathered up anything he could find on Mello or himself and destroyed it all in one go, keeping only what he thought he could later use. :\
Thanks! ^^

The Toronto news clipping is about the fire Near's parents died in, and at the time, people thought the kid had died in too. The police report describes how Near was found in the ruins of the house a few days later, still alive. The key opens a safe deposit box at Mizuho Bank; I don't know if you've read Another Note, but the whole book is supposedly written by Mello for L's successor, so in my little fiction here Mello has left the book behind in the safebox for Near.
thanks, i'm glad you like it! ^^

This is an amazing idea. Very simple yet tells so much about Near's life. The little note from Mello really gets me as does the photo of his parents with the sheet music is so profound. I love all the attention to detail you have here, including Linda's signature on the drawing with the year. Though the case file and the article just gets me, especially juxtaposed with the photo.
Though on a side note: Near's Canadian? That makes me happy because I make L Canadian in my universe. I've also been playing with a fic that shows snippets of L's life story too so this charges the muses a little.
