Chapter Three: Limbo

A month had passed by since Daiki walked you home.
The two of you were at the rooftop eating lunch.
"Ahhh! Teriyaki burger never disappoints." He stretched his arms out satisfied with his meal.
You gave him a smile, and continued sipping on your strawberry milk shake.
He scooted closer to you and laid his head on your lap.
"Daiki..?" You set your cup down to your side.
He grunted.
"...What are we?" You asked, looking down at him.
You can tell he's feigning sleep, but decided to leave it at that.

Ever since he walked you home that evening, you couldn't help but be restless.
It was apparent that he was jealous of the way you and Kiyoshi were chatting, and he even held your hand. But he hasn't said anything to you about it since and he avoided your questions every time you bring it up.

You stroked his dark blue hair.
It's so soft... your heart beating fast again.
Daiki turned to his side, his face towards your abdomen, letting out a low moan.
You took that as a cue to continue combing your hands through his hair.

Its moments like these that make you wonder what you are to Daiki.

As the wind blew your consciousness away to slumber, you lied yourself down on the ground.
You felt Daiki moved and put his arms around you as you both fell asleep with full stomachs.

The bell woke you up like usual.
You opened your eyes and realized your face was right against Daiki's chest.
Your bodies were so close, you can feel his rhythmic breathing against you.
Your face turned red and your heart nearly jumped out of your chest.
You moved his arms slowly so you could sit up and saw that he had laid his jacket on top of your legs like a blanket, keeping you warm and unexposed.

"Hey." His low, deep voice chimed in your ears.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up." You gave him an apologetic smile.
"It's okay. School is over. I'm hungry again though." He sat up and stretched his arms.
"We can go get food if you want. I'm hungry too."
"Nah, you should just cook me something." He coaxed.
"O-Okay." You were surprised by his sudden request.

The both of you got up and went to your apartment.
You pulled out some ingredients out of the fridge and quickly began making Omurice¹.
He sat on the island bar and watched you whisk the eggs and cook the meal.
"You look well hearsed with this." His eyes never leaving your hands.
"Its just something I like to cook if I want something quick and filling." You replied, heat rising to your cheek at his compliment.

You ate in silence, and the sound of chopsticks seemed to echo and bounce off the walls.
When you were done, you got up and set the dishes on the sink.
Daiki silently crept up behind you and wrapping his arms around you.
"Thanks for the meal." he rested his head on top of yours.
"Yeah no problem." you stood there and enjoyed the minute of closeness.

You turned around and Daiki lowered his head and kissed your lips.
For a moment you were stunned, his lips were soft, warm and moist against yours.
You wanted time to stay still.
He pulled away and looked at you before stating that he had to go to practice before Momoi
comes over and throws a tantrum. You gave him a nod and saw him off to the door.

You return in your apartment, heart beating fast and face hot as fire.
A pain in your chest began to manifest, knowing that you two aren't really together.
You heaved a sigh, Why are you even doing this to yourself?
Your phone buzzed, it was a text from Kiyoshi.
Hey, are you free right now?

You shrugged. Oh what the hell... Why not, he hasn't even given me an answer. I'm stuck on limbo with Daiki and Kiyoshi-kun is just a friend anyway. You thought to yourself as you sent him a reply.
Yeah, what's up?

Kiyoshi invited you to come watch a practice match tonight so you changed from your uniform into your casual clothes. You put on a flowy pink shirt and some jean shorts with thigh high socks and converse. You headed out with your tote over your shoulders and put your hair up in a pony tail as you waited for the bus to take you to Seirin.

Once you arrived, you headed to the gym.
You opened the double doors and let yourself in.
"(Name)-chan!" Kiyoshi ran towards you and you waved at him.
"Hey, Kiyoshi-kun!" you greeted him back, and your eyes widen once you saw Tōō Academy's basketball team warming up for a game behind him.
Kiyoshi put his arm around your shoulder and led you to the bleachers where you can sit and watch. You see Daiki staring straight at you, a big scowl on his face.

Momoi noticed you were there and ran to give you a hug and sit by you.
"Dai-chan is so funny~" she giggled watching her friend who is obviously frustrated.
"How is he funny? He's always got that ugly scowl on his face." You pouted.
"He's funny because he won't ask you out and yet he gets overly jealous when you hang out with other guys." she pointed out how he's suddenly distracted as soon as you walked in with Kiyoshi's arm on your shoulder, but you just rolled your eyes at the idea.

The game began with Tōō taking the ball and Daiki scored a dunk.
You can tell from watching that he's taking his frustration out on the game.
The first quarter ended with Tōō leading 20 to 8.
The buzzer went off signaling the beginning of the second quarter where Seirin's center, Kiyoshi began scoring one after the other.
You couldn't help but let out a cheer as your friend scored. You felt a scorching stare from Daiki and you avoided his gaze.

Momoi let out a laugh when she saw how you both interacted leaving Daiki even more irritated.
Towards the end of the second quarter, Seirin caught up with Tōō at 36 to 28.
Half time was called and Daiki ran to where you are and picked you up and threw you over his shoulders like a kid.
"Wait! Daiki! Put me down!" You begged but he didn't say anything.
"DAI-CHAN~!!!" Momoi called out from the other side of the court and you see Kiyoshi running after you but was stopped by his coach.

Daiki took you outside and set you down.
"What are you doing here?!" His voice rose, you can tell he was really mad.
"Kiyoshi invited me to watch, is that bad? I wanted to support my frie-"
"HE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND." He shouted, making you jump back.
"Why does it matter so much? It isn't like we're to-" he cut you off, pressing his lips hard against you. You tried pushing him off but he was too strong. Instead he grabbed your wrists and pulled you closer.

He pulled away breathing hard.
"Take a fucking hint already." His eyes were ablaze with anger and he stomped off back into the court leaving you outside by yourself.
