Description In Sumerian mythology, Nammu is the Sumerian creation goddess. If the Babylonian creation myth EnΓ»ma Elish is based on a Sumerian myth, which seems likely, Nammu is the Sumerian goddess of the primeval sea that gave birth to An (heaven) and Ki (earth) and the first gods. She was probably the first personification of the constellation which the Babylonians later called Tiamat and the Greeks called Cetus and represented the Apsu, the fresh water ocean which the Sumerians believed lay beneath the earth, the source of life-giving water and fertility in a country with almost no rainfall. She is attended by seven minor goddesses.

Nammu bore An a son, Enki. She and her Enki created mankind as assistants for the gods. She moulded clay collected and brought it to life, thus creating mankind

Gorgeouse picture i love how it kinda merge with the earth.
Since Nammu is a female goddess(?) i guess the chest should display boobs, that shows her role as a creation goddess very good.
The Body overall has a amazing shading and those colors match perfectly together and have a fluid transition.
Though you seems to disagree with religion, you have a interest in Sumerians that is interesting, yeah the Ancients have many secrets...

Thank you for the perceptive compliments. Glad you enjoyed my artwork.
As to (organized)religions, I consider most to be derivative bastardizations of earlier belief systems. At their best, they provide an easy source of community and comfort to the masses. At worst, they attract psychopathic zealots like moths to a flame. I lean more toward a personal, internal dialogue between myself and the universe. Someone much wiser than me once said, "Spirituality is unanswered questions; religion is unquestioned answers."

I had a vision of lowering myself into the Apsu once...
You know how alcohol burns your mouth?
The "Water between the Worlds" burns you inside and out.
I felt a thing like a large red blood cell swimming through me.
Fortunately, I pulled myself out.
Only the strongest spirits could swim through that stuff without dissolution.

Sounds like quite a harrowing experience! Perhaps tapping into some rarely encountered part of the Universal Consciousness... Glad you survived.

Fantastic! Is this your representation of the goddess, or is this from some sort of historical image or description?

Thank you!
My own interpretation or a vision channeled from the Collective Subconscious, I can't say for certain. The original inspiration for this image was a clipart photo of a lonely tree clinging to a seaside outcrop. Though almost nothing remains from the original image, I felt compelled to retain the elemental symbolism of earth, sea and sky. When I chanced across the description of the Sumerian goddess Nammu, it seemed a perfect match.

That is how I typically draw also. I see some basic shape somewhere and I use it as a base and let my subconscious take over. By the way, have you ever heard of Oberto Airaudi and the rather interesting art and philosophy movement that he started in Italy around 30 years ago called Damanhur ([link] ). He had some crazy ideas/visions and undertook an amazing task of building underground artistic palaces in a hillside beneath a small buildings. Others pitched in and it become a reality. If you follow the link above and click on "the temples" you can view some of this artistic underground world. It is humbling to see the scope of what some people do!

I found the temple images quite impressive. A bit more modern and 'new age', but on a parallel with the visions and architecture of Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia [link] (For recent snapshots you won't find on their official website, check out the gallery of IvyI [link] )

The starting point for this image was a rocky seacoast outcropping.

When the figure began to evolve, I wanted to keep her somehow tied in with the sea. I first researched the mythological 'Sirens', but found the description of 'Nammu' as a primeval Creation deity to be a much better fit for her weathered, ancient appearance.

"Religion easily has the best bullshit story of all time. Think about it. Religion has convinced people that there's an invisible man...living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money."
