Description I've been wanting to color this sketch for a while since I felt it would lend itself well as a practice in dramatic atmosphere : lots of shadows, focused lighting, etc. With this I was really trying to push myself not to be afraid adding shadow; I sometimes find when working in color that I tend to not have a set light source and put shadows kinda wherever. So hopefully I've stepped in the right direction with this one

Enough with my artistic ramblings, lol, I hope ya'll enjoy it all the same. Here's the original for those of you not familiar [link]

Also a question: I was considering doing some lineart for people to color for like, you know, funsies...would anyone want to if I put some up? Let me know cause I like to see what you guys come with

I feel like this describes Al-san perfectly.

I totally agree with this picture! I always saw Alfred as a very depressed and sad character on the inside, but a happy and animated character on the outside!

This embodies my head cannon of him perfectly!! I love the way you did this, really good job!!

And now that I read the comments below, I see that I'm not the only one who this is their head cannon....

Thanks ^^

It's true that a lot of us see him like this. He just can't be that happy and ignorant knowing what his people and country are going through.

Besides, there's nothing wrong with an angsty Alfred pic every now and then.

Wow. This picture is really appealling. I like all the implied ideas that go along with it. Very deep.

It kinda reflects my head canon about him in a way and was also influenced by some fanfics I'd read that had the same theme of him masking his true self, usually to protect himself and others.

Oh gosh this feeds my head cannon of Al like no tomorrow.

And the coloring is very well done, especially the shading.

Mah coloring skillz are horrible but if it wasn't for that I would like to.
I can actually see the angle where the light is coming from so as long as that distinguished its good

It's all for fun anyway so you can still do it if you want, no matter the level of your coloring skills

Thanks, as this was supposed to be practice in doing just that so I'm glad I was able to pull it off

lol - I have the same problem with light sources sometimes. But you did a really good job with this. I really like his eye for some reason.

And I'd LOVE to color some of your lineart if you feel like putting some up for that express purpose. Dunno when I'd find the time, but the coloring process is my favorite out of creating a piece of art, and drawing the lineart and shading is... not a necessary evil, exactly, but they're definitely not my favorite steps.

Confession: I love coloring hair and eyes I play with all the different highlight and shadow combinations and then you have all kinds of variations with color and such. Fun times!

The only problem I have with the initial line art sometimes is that I can't get the lines thin enough for intimate details. For whatever reason the lines always look too thick to me and I can't get any line variation to save my life! But that's the artist in me screaming so I have to put that person aside sometimes and say "It's fine! Chill!"

Eeeee, me too! Those are my favorite things to shade.

*sigh* You and me, both. Either the lines look too thick and close together, or it gets all pixily when you zoom out.

That's why I usually make my initial scans large and make the linework from that so when I go to put it up here I can make it smaller so the lines seem smaller when I want them to be. And I try not to rely on the pen tool in photoshop...yeah my lines would look straighter but then I'd loose that sketchy look that I like.

That's a good strategy. I'll keep that in mind.

Good job on this - I love seeing it in colour and if anything, he looks more...pitiful's not the right word, but...I just feel bad for him, you know? I think it's because the colouring emphasizes the shadows on his face and neck, so he looks a bit thinner, almost like the stress of keeping up this façade has worn him away from the inside.

Okay...maybe I'm reading too much into this thing now.

As for colouring linearts, I'm always open to that - heck, I coloured one of your pics and then told you after the fact, remember? That being said, I'm always open for more colouring practice, so anything you can come up with is fair game right now.

Thanks, and your interpretation's as accurate as any Melancholic might be what you're looking for, even though to me even that word's still too light for how intense the pic feels, but he could certainly use a hug!

Lol, I know I remember and I still love that you did that That combined with what I've seen people do here in general with linearts kinda inspired me to wanna offer such things as well, because it's fun to see how someone else might interpret a picture, at least color wise.

And it gives you guys something to do for fun, so why not?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KitakLaw In reply to ScarletteDiscord [2012-02-13 02:00:10 +0000 UTC]

No, melancholic is not really the word I was looking for either. I think I WOULD be looking for the Cantonese version of the word "pitiful", because it doesn't carry the same connotations of weakness that the English does...it's more like "deserving sympathy or mercy".

Yay!

Ah, okay. That would certainly fit better...my head can't seem to come up with the English equivalent though, if there even is one -__-...I just wanna hug him and tell him everything's okay, that's all I know ;_;
