Bellezza, I'd say it applies to essentially all mindless consumerism & media driven propaganda but but fashion wise, buying to be "seen" in particular brands is essentially a "Mc'Donalds" mind-set & simply shows a sheep mentality instead of trying to be individual, which is usually the opposite of what the person is trying to achieve.
