Description This piece is a tribute to my stay in South Africa. I lived there for six years, during which I climbed this baobab.  This tree was on a farm in Musina, owned by a family friend.

Hello I am Cody from ProjectComment .

Although you and I do not share the same art style we share the love for color and imagination of what we can do with color as far as expression of color. The digital painting shows a contrast of light and dark colors.  you seem to be able to create space by having the colors form in ways to really move as if alive and collide with lights and dark to really send the message.  There are no real linesin my mind, again like it's a living piece, it shows texture in the uses of different color values for the tree and sky and ground to show the difference between the shaded area and sunny area.  The painting shows a realistic scene, with out just being a normal basic picture I really enjoy that. With that said, I would love to see a more high quality aspect of this, as a sucker for details, and of course color, I would love to see it bigger with more define complexity, in the background to me it blends well but in turn does not explain the scene as much as you do in the bio. Also in pointing out that this is in fact a scene you saw whilst in Africa, a use in local colors and local meanings in types of colors would be neat to go with this. The sky / background I felt was well done the lights to dark's could of been slightly more drastic just to let the tree stand out a bit more as if in a plain or in a isolated location. Your style is truly one of a kind which makes doing comments and critiques so hard for some pieces, but overall I think with your style and ability to see color and expand of that with images and locations that you have been to, while also describing a story is a great ability to have and to hold onto, I can't wait to see much more of you work int he future and with all the comments and critiques to see what path you take in the next project that comes to mind. With that I hope it's larger, filled with details to really show your strengths. Good luck with everything your doing and everything you plan to do!

Hello! I'm Jessica from ProjectComment to critique your work. I normally prefer to comment on traditional art because I have a better grasp of how it is created, but I really love the colors in this one.

The colors are just fantastic to look at not only because of the range of colors and shades, but also the shapes they swirl into. I do appreciate that the bulk of the colors on the tree, sky, and earth have a good deal of naturally occurring colors lending a realistic feel to a very surreal piece.  The way the colors blend together also keeps a viewer intrigued. There is also a balance of color where no area is over saturated with one particular color. Some places do have more than others, but it isn't overwhelmingly so. The entire piece is littered with soft gradients and sharp contrasts which normally would not be harmonious together, but end up working well in this piece.  The tree itself also assists in this.

I don't know if this was intentional or not, but in certain areas the swirl shapes appear to create other images. In the trunk of the tree near where a majority of the branches separate, I see a monk sitting down. There are other places in which I see an eye or the outline of a face. This is really a fun way to engage the viewer. You could hide all sorts of things in a piece like this that would only be found by a prolonged study of the work. Not only is it a fun thing to do, it is also a way to get a message across. Of course people will see what they wish to in art so the viewer may see things you never intended them to see.

One other thing that I wanted to touch upon is the signature. While the colors match parts of the portrait, it really doesn't stand out and it is hard to read. I would suggest a different color such as white for this piece or maybe a light shade of the color it is in.

I hope I've helped in some way by giving you a traditional artist's perspective on your work. It is really interesting and I hope next time you post, you include more about your creating process so I can better understand your trials and triumphs.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to sit back and dedicate yourself to making such a helpful comment!

I am very glad you like the coloring and contrasting.  It really engages my eye, so I was hoping it would successfully engage others'.

You are not the first to mention seeing things in the branches.  I must say that is pretty cool, but it was fully unintentional.  I was actually trying to balance staying true to the original tree and being expressive.  I guess it is a nice bonus

I see what you mean about the signature, and I am not sure about fixing it.  I hate how signatures detract from the beauty of art, so I try to blend mine in or hide them a lot (depending on how it effects the piece).  I will ask if others would like the signature to stand out more, too, and maybe I will change my mind

Thanks again!

It was my pleasure to critique your work. It really helps me because I'm focused on realism and traditional mediums and viewing other types of art helps bring a different perspective and in some cases inspiration.

I think it is awesome that the images viewers have been seeing are unintentional. If I were you, I'd be hiding all sorts of images and letting them know in the artists comments....or not hiding them and still tell them about it just to see what they come up with.

I know some signatures do take away from the work by being a bit of a distraction although some I've seen have added to a piece. Just depends on the piece and the signature.

Cool. I am not sure I could pull off hiding things intentionally.  That sounds like a lot of work!   I'll have to give it a try and see if anything comes out of it.

Well, I don't know the perfect word for it, but "something that seems to come straight out from a dream and you almost don't know exactly what is for real" is what I have in mind, expecially with your trademark colouring

This is a masterpiece. Love the use of colours and lighting in the background. First of all let me start with detail- the tree is very detailed. All the branches are visible and intricate. Overall, the painting is very detailed and appealing.
The colours are very striking and pleasing.

The background is is very nicely done. It definitely reminds me of a bright blue sky.

The style of this painting is unique and original. It brings a touch of emotion and expressionism.

On a scale of one to ten I give it 9.5/10.

have a great day. Keep uploading

Thank you so much!  I had to go back and redo the piece twice because I failed at the clear detail.  I am glad the third try was successful in that

This is a comment for and from ProjectComment

I really often do not comment on art like this. Normally art that really interests me is fantasy art and things have have a backstory to them. But as I was looking through my messages for ProjectComment, I can across this and it leaped out at me and caught my eye.

This tree is very detailed. the arms go out in many directions and twists and turns in intriguing branches. Some of the branches look a little forced. You had your canvas and you tried to fit most of the tree on it. However, it still looks wonderful.

And don't get me started on the coloring. WOW. the coloring you used is mesmerizing and definitely made me wants to get a closer look. This piece really speaks to me emotionally and shows true beauty in art.

In a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, I would give this a 9. This really isn't my normal take on art, but this deviation is wonderful.

I hope this helps you out.
I hope you have a blessed day.
