Description: The guinearunner is a large bird that has taken the place of the common ostrich after the ostrich went extinct. It has evolved from the helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris), a smaller grassland-dwelling bird. The guinearunners are smaller than the extinct ostrich and they also live in large herds of around 10 to 12 guinearunners. This is mainly for protection against predators, as some guinearunners can look out for predators while the others eat. There are usually 2 to 3 males in a herd while the rest of the birds are female. There are some herds that are completely male and these rouge males will try to overthrow the leader of a herd. These rouge males will then take the females as their new mates.
The body of the guinearunner is covered in thin string-like feathers, although the head is completely feather-less. The guinearunner has a large crest on top of its head. This crest is used for attracting mates, to intimidate predators, and for fighting with each other by head butting each other. They can defend themselves with their sharp claws which can easily cut through flesh. The claws are also used to dig up roots and small animals.
A herd of guinearunners has a large territory, about 155 square kilometers. A group will usually stay in a certain spot for about 10 to 12 years. The place will usually have a large supply of food and water. Some guinearunner herds may move if food or water is not available, although this doesn’t happen often. Rouge males will move very often in search of females.
