Description

[Hey! Mickey, give five!]

[Oh, sorry! I've only got four!]

^~^

After I made part 1. It seems many friends here are making cartoon or comic characters also , they asked me if I can make a tutorial for the hand etc. So here you are!

It's a simple tutorial of how to make a cartoon hand. It is pretty much self explain of step by step in the picture comparison. I tried not to put too many words here, so you may think more about what's the best method for you.  Although it looks simple but you do need the proportional conception of human's hand and fingers in mind. And also compare with the character that you are making. Make a good calculation for the size, think it over through, get it right at once.

I like to make hand a separated piece to sculpt it in my hand instead of sculpt it on the figure. It moves back and forth if attached on the figure. Why not make it in your hand, so when it's ready, put it on the figure, you'll only need a minor adjustment.  You may bake it first before you put it on figurine. The picture shown with a shape knife meant when you are going to bend the fingers. Make a shape "V" cut in the joint but don't cut it off! Pull it up a little, bend it and fix a bit for the gaps after you bend it. Sometimes, you might want to make the fingers longer if you want to cut and bend them.

I make it in small scale so you may use the same skill to make larger hands. Hope this may help you a little. Please advise if you have any suggestion or question. Thank you for watching my friends! Enjoy!!

Good luck to your adventure!!

NP, it's privilege to learn from best. I'm currently trying to sculpt from paper-mache. Not exactly a "dreamy" material, but it's a low-cost alternative for starters like me..y'know.. get a hang of the technique and such. P.S.: Your tool walktrough was also a great help -DIY wooden tools works like a charm.(cut- and filed from popsicle sticks )

Thank you BIG time Wish you plenty of creative energy too

Hope you can find the way and keep the interest, it can be a life time of work!

bread-doh [2014-03-02 15:52:12 +0000 UTC]

while it seems structurally flawless, what'll you do if you break a finger after its baked? we know gluing things together doesn't always guarantee strength like one that is made in less processes/phases I guess you would rather create a new one as what you did seems to make it done in 10 minutes though.. but it still just a guess

open hands in sculptures are awesome

sculptor101 In reply to bread-doh [2014-03-03 00:17:40 +0000 UTC]

Break a finger after it's baked seems hasn't being happened to me. But if it has, I'll just use crazy glue either it's soft or baked. The main reason making it in a separate piece, because Super Sculpey shall better be made between soft and harden. So there is always some place can be hold and avoid touch the soft area directly for too long.

I guess it won't hurt to see all different kind of methods about making hands. I might make a tutorial for making animal hands or dragon claws etc. ^^
