How to make figurine hairs tutorial

As frequent requests of many friends here, I make this simple tutorial of how to make figurine hairs. Hope you would have the idea of how I make the hairs. There are many different ways making hairs depends on hair style. I'm making wavy long hairs here. I'll make other hair styles when my time allows.  And sorry I only make half of the hairs for your reference.

It is pretty much self explain of step by step in the picture comparison. Although it looks simple but you do need the proportional conception of your figurine to hairs in mind, compare with the size and styles of characters that you are making. Realistic, comic or cartoon etc.

I make a basic head/ face in 20 minus for example, I'm not going to do anything with the face so I leave it unfinished like that. Just focus on making hairs.  I didn't look on any drawings or pictures when sculpt this figurine, just float with the clay, follow how it goes. You can look at your reference or designs if any.

Keep this in mind, no matter how you do it, always start from big portion of hairs first, don't just go right to the detail hair lines. When you are done and happy with big portion of hairs, go making the lines, make it like when you are drawing a sketch.  Make more lines and details in deeper areas. Less lines on raised hairs which will make it look shiny in layers. Don't do the lines all the way. It will end up like yarns or brushes. You may use the knife to cut open some outstretched hairs. Fix a little bit the sharp edges with your fingers or tools.

As you can see, I use wooden tools for hair in angle, that would make better lines without going back and forth to fix it because some tools you use maybe too sharp for it. "Important point: don't make the hairs in crossing lines." Even they look across but they don't in reality. Hairs are in layers, well, usually...

Oh by the way, you may use nail polish remover or denatured alcohol to smooth it out when finished, don't put too much! Do some test on other clay before you apply to your sculptures! Touch up with the hair lines again if necessary, please refer to my tools tutorial #18 and 19 at

Hope this may help you a little. Please advise if you have any suggestion or question. Thank you for watching my friends! Enjoy!!

Great tutorial ^_^ The hair looks really beautiful (as the face btw )
I admire everyone who can work only with the normal Sculpey. I think I'm to rude for it *laugh* That's why I mix it with Firm to make it harder.

I read somewhere that things like nail polish remover or alcohol can make Sculpey dry and it gets little cracks when you bake it.
Because of that I use olive oil : ) But it would be interesting if you know such problems.

I'll look forward for more really helpful tutorials from you : )
One more thing: I like your wooden tools, they look nice to work with ^^

Thanks so much!
I was focusing on the method of making hairs in this tutorial. The face just a guide model that didn't have much detail. ^^

I haven't issued much problem using nail polish remover or alcohol completely denatured. But nail polish remover may vary by the formula of each brand, so I suggest bring a piece of clay and use the testier bottle to try it first. Even if you bring it home, "always test on a piece of clay and bake it first before you actually apply on your artworks".

The wooden tools are the answer of super sculpey, I probably need to take times to explain why and how to make a good one. I'm so glad any tutorials may help getting more friends here be willing to try sculpting. ^^

I made a really simple wood tool from the end of a brush. As I said it is reeeeeally simple but it seems to work ^^ But it would be awesome if you would find time to make a tutorial. And I think I'm not the only one who thinks so

Sure, I'l love to make a tutorial for wooden tools. I just think people might not be interested as so many tools you can buy at the art store easily. Mine tools making is really traditional way of making haha... I see the tools as my fingers so I need to know them very well. ^^

BlackCrow321 In reply to sculptor101 [2014-03-11 14:59:40 +0000 UTC]

I have clay shapers and metal tools. You can work good with both but.. I don't know it isn't perfect. You have to rub oil onto the clay shapers otherwise they would roughening the surface of the clay. And the metal tools are to sharp sometimes. You see I'm still searching for a good tool xD

True you can buy a lot of wooden tools in stores but as you said they are mostly to large for our purpose. Or you see one perfect tool but you can only buy it in a huge set -_-

The tutorial hasn't to be really big. Information like size, different forms and if you use something like clear coat after sanding would be enough (for me of course - can't speak for the others )

sculptor101 In reply to AkhekhuFire [2014-02-25 07:31:13 +0000 UTC]

It will be easy if you make the layers first, don't go right to the detail lines. More uneven but affluent layers will get better result. Hope the tutorial may help you! Thanks! ^^
