Making figurine heads and base tutorial
This the final tutorial in this series, an angel and a soldier. It took a long time finishing it, and hundreds of pictures were taken during the process. I knew how to sculpt, not really good at teaching, but I tried to explain the process by photos. It really got paused and disturbed when taken photos once a while that a sculpting work shouldn't have. Finally, I get it done!
Some tips:
*the face features
Make sure you have measured the right scale and size of the head, compared with your figurine. I usually make the face from the forehead for the size of head, bridge of the nose for centering and its profile first.
Basic shape and thickness of lips and the chin. And then the cheeks. It may go back and forth a few times checking the face features in proportion according to the right size.
DON'T GO TO THE DETAIL YET, unless you have the right size. It may look rough but don't worry. Believe me, you've got many hours to go before you get there.
*countenance
The expression of a figurine means a lot to the sculpture. Although you might have any reason making the faces whatever you like. I have only one suggestion, make them look as natural as possible. So they may look good and last longer.
Get reference from any resources for all kind of countenance. Study human's anatomy and the reference you've got.
*The most difficult part for some new artist is somehow make both side of face the same but opposite. This you've just have to find a way to handle your tools no matter if you use right or left hand holding mostly.
*the base
You may have seen the picture that I used A4 paper, some thick cut cardboards, rolling pin to flatten the clay! It's really useful using these combination to flatten Super Sculpey in different thickness of layers. Clay won't stick much to the paper, that's why I put a cardboard on the turn table when sculpting.
I made some of the burning woods, rocks, scraps etc and baked first. I used aluminum foil to make texture instead of little rocks, also used designer brush to make the sand and dirt.
Enjoy!

Thank you for the amazing tutorials. I am looking to follow up on a childhood passion now I am in retirement. One stupid question if I may. Where can I find sources on how to separate the model from its arms etc. when it is done so as to make molding easier?
I try using cutters etc to cut the arms and legs off and end up with a total mess because of the armature! Know I am doing something simple wrong somewhere.
Thanks once again

Each tutorials did spend quite sometime making. But the response from a friend like you made everything worthy! Thank you for your support.

It's the common name for Super Sculpey, the color is kind of pink/ peach.
There are also other colors and usages.

This series of tutorials is incredible, as is the work you do! If I may ask, how do you avoid Super Sculpey cracking with all this baking, layering and re-baking? It's my number one problem with Super Sculpey, and it's so frustrating I just want to give up.

You may bake the clay with lower temperature and less minus each time to avoid the cracking problem. It may still crack sometimes, I usually prepare crazy glue after baked. But so far, it's good to manage to me. I haven't gotten serious problem with it.

I don't quite understand your question. The angel raises her right hand paying. Her face?

I've been there... Sorry to say that!
There were tears and frustration when the time I started my sculpting career. And I didn't even have the computer or internet, not to mention anything called tutorials. I have my tools and clay.
You may make a choice either try it or give up, there is no easy way in sculpting or any fine arts I guess.
But we can help each other by sharing methods and encouraging.
