Resolute// admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering
The drive, the sheer determination Margaret has just for everyday living is astounding. She burns with a quiet passion that always seems to rekindle even after being snuffed out. Margaret firmly believes that everyone has a purpose . . . She just doesn't know exactly what hers is yet. Lately, she has been feeling a bit disheartened, but keeps striving to discover her calling in life.
Intelligent// having or showing intelligence, especially of a high level
It was clear to Falk and Owena from the beginning that their daughter has a very active mind. Margaret easily understands most every new concept presented to her; she loved learning about the history of Hireath and magic, and did so much more quickly than most other colts and fillies. She has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge that her parents are thankful she can now mainly fulfill through her own studies.
Pious// devoutly religious
Her parents raised Margaret to revere all the gods, but to hold Argus in especially high esteem. Falk prays to Argus and occasionally Alya, as his parents taught him to do so, and Owena is doggedly loyal to the God of Arcane. As she has gotten older, Margaret's devotion to Argus has grown from a sort of crazed following to a deeper respect and understanding. She has gone through several times of doubt, more so in the strength of her faith rather than in Argus himself, but always eventually feels reassured that he is still with her despite her flaws.
Scrupulous// diligent, thorough, and extremely attentive to details; very concerned to avoid doing wrong
Margaret is a perfectionist. She has very high standards for herself and is terrified of making mistakes, especially when the consequences could harm others. She won't cease whatever she is doing until she is satisfied, or until something else prevents her from continuing. Margaret will work to the point of exhaustion if no one stops her.
Trusting// showing or tending to have a belief in a person's honesty or sincerity; not suspicious
Margaret is not necessarily naive; she has just never had a reason to assume others have malicious intent. This means it would be easier to take advantage of her, but (depending on the situation) she would likely figure out what is going on rather quickly. She chooses to give others the benefit of the doubt until they do something wrong. Though this characteristic is a weakness, it has also benefited Margaret by allowing her to maintain the relationships she currently has. She has trouble getting to know others, but once she does, it's hard to break her trust.
Acquiescent// ready to accept something without protest, or to do what someone else wants
Margaret is quick to repress her personal desires due to her obedience to authoritative figures, and others in general. She unquestioningly follows orders or jumps at the opportunity to help others, but will not go so far as to challenge her own morals. In other words, she is incredibly tolerant, but only to a certain extent.
Restive// unable to keep still or silent and becoming increasingly difficult to control, especially because of impatience, dissatisfaction, or boredom
Falk and Owena are always telling Margaret to be patient. She tries, she really does, but it is extremely difficult for her. If she isn't doing or learning something, Margaret feels like her life is being wasted. She is almost constantly eager and ready to move on to the next challenge, which is an issue when there are no new tasks for her to conquer. For this reason, Margaret has been known to make up her own to-do lists, sometimes of things others would view as unnecessary or just plain silly, but she has to do this to keep from going crazy. Inhibited // unable to act in a relaxed and natural way because of self-consciousness or mental restraint
Social interaction is not one of Margaret's strengths. She doesn't dislike it-- she simply isn't good at it. Give a quiet, awkward horse crippling self-doubt and you've got Margaret. She is not always affected to such an extreme extent, but this lack of faith in her capabilities, despite her tremendous successes, often keeps her from doing things outside her comfort zone even if deep down she really wants to try.
History
Pre-Birth- Birth:
Passionate, happy-go-lucky Owena and hardy, soft-spoken Falk had only been married a little over a year when the young magi told her husband she wanted to start a family. The cautious stallion was unsure if they were ready for a foal, but he eventually conceded to his wife's wishes, unable to resist her incessant pleading. It was not long before the mare was expecting.
Owena's pregnancy filled her with such bliss; she went about her everyday duties with a glow about her. However, a few weeks before the foal was to be born, she felt an uncanny sense of foreboding. She tried to shake this feeling, attributing it to normal anxiety approaching a birth, but her efforts were fruitless. The mare was devoutly religious and extremely perceptive, so this new emotion deeply troubled her. Against her instinct, she decided not to tell Falk, not wanting to worry him and knowing he would easily dismiss the information in order to comfort her. Her dread grew with each passing day; her prayers to Argus grew more fervent, but the fear did not subside.
Falk could sense that there was something wrong on the day his son was born. The birth itself went smoothly, but as his wife lay eyes on the foal, she immediately burst into tears. Falk's joy was transformed into confusion, and then into heartbreak as the healer explained with flattened ears and lowered eyes that the child had Lethal White condition-- intestinal abnormalities caused by underdeveloped nerves. He wouldn't live more than a few days. The new father tried to solace his wife, but she was inconsolable. She wailed on and he felt himself crumble hearing her lamentation and looking at the snow-colored foal that would soon have his life so unfairly taken.
The water burial took place a week later. Owena explained to her husband that she had known what was going to happen. This disturbed Falk, but he forgave her and made her promise to tell him anything of this sort in the future. Owena became an empty husk, berating herself for her stupidity and failure as a mother. Falk became absorbed in his work, trying to suppress the pain of losing his son. They both continued on in their lives, melancholy and regretful.
_
A year passed in a blur. It once again came time for the Day of the Wisps, a tradition Owena has always held dear. After the residing priest gave a gentle speech about the spirits' presence in their lives and rang the customary bell, she felt peace she had not known in a long while. Falk went home to get into a good book, but Owena decided to stay at the shrine. She had been meditating for hours when she heard a small, gentle whisper. The magi saw a tiny white wisp that spoke to her, and then was gone. Whether it was a dream, a vision, or was truly there, she did not know. But she did know what it had said. Realizing it was time to once again ring the bells, she did so and eagerly galloped home to tell her husband.
Owena burst into the room without warning, out of breath and still in somewhat of a state of shock. Falk jumped up in confusion at his wife's sudden appearance.
"Falk! We are having another kid!" She managed to gasp out.
Falk tilted his head. ". . . What? But . . . We'd said--"
"I know, I know! But the wisps! A wisp told me. It told me we were supposed to try again, that it would be okay this time!"
"Owena, this isn't . . . Are you sure?"
The cream-and-white colored mare stamped her hoof. "Of course! This is a sign, Falk. It's a sign. We have to!"
Falk was still skeptical, but he trusted his wife, and did not want to question the wills of Argus, so he agreed.
_
"What do you want to call her?" he murmured, gently nuzzling the top of the black-and-white foal's head.
"Margaret. You know, since it sounds kind of like 'Argus'... I think it's fitting to give homage." Owena's chest swelled with gratitude and hope looking down at the little child, already praying for her well-being.
Falk smiled. "Perfect."
Childhood:
With a father who is a distinguished servant to the royal family, and mother a dutiful magi, Margaret was bound to have the ideals of the Umare imprinted upon her. From a young age, she had an acutely developed sense of responsibility, both from the teachings of her parents and her natural intelligence and maturity. However, Margaret still retained her normal childhood sense of awe, staring wide-eyed as she learned about the Gods' War or learned about Blessings. She wanted to know it all, from lore to magic to the herds and beyond. Her parents had a bit of trouble keeping up with her, and thus often had to go along with whatever she wanted to do. They even obliged when Margaret wanted to get her mane shaved to "look like Argus." She was not a bad child-- in fact, she was extremely obedient, but she just wore them out.
Eventually, Margaret grew even more responsible and eager. However, her anticipation was more contained, as she became quieter and wiser as the years went on. Her participation in events and traditions took on more meaning, and she wanted to be able to better contribute to the herd. Her parents allowed her to accompany them and other Umare members to their jobs for a few days to expose her to all that was available to her. Though she inquired about the New Generation professions, her parents told her not to concern herself with such things. She didn't fully understand at the time, but did not question further.
Once she turned 12, Margaret was soon to decide that she wanted to follow in her mother's hoofsteps. She officially became a magi and began to study under her mother with great perseverance. She was quick to grasp new information as always and get into the routine of things.
Teenage Years- Nearing Adulthood:
It was not long before Margaret knew all the basics and Owena offered to teach her about her own specialization, which involves awareness of self, surroundings, and beyond. Margaret was interested, but it became clear it was not her passion. She grew frustrated. She had spent her whole life learning, preparing; she had been so concerned with her studies that she hadn't even considered what she even wanted to do. Her parents assured her it was normal to feel a bit of self-doubt, especially at her age, but Margaret was not used to this feeling of purposelessness. She was an arrow in a bow that didn't have a target, and the string was growing more and more taut each day.
_
This is around the time the dreams started. Margaret had always had rather vivid dreams, but these ones were much different. At first they did not happen every night, so she wasn't too suspicious. Then the frequency and clearness of these dreams increased, and Margaret knew there had to be some significance. Sometimes she would see a very young white colt, but other times he was nearly an adult. He told her important things, but she could never remember what he had said when she woke up.
Finally wishing for the torment of confusion to end, she told her parents about these strange night visions, hoping they knew some way to help her. As soon as she described the white horse, Margaret saw a change come over her parents.
"What? What is it?" Margaret asked with fear in her voice, not understanding their reactions.
Seeing that his wife looked terribly upset, Falk answered their daughter. "That . . . that sounds like your brother."
"My what?"
"Margaret, your mother and I . . . We had a foal before you. He didn't live very long because of a condition he had."
Margaret stepped backwards slightly. ". . . Oh. Why . . . why didn't you tell me?"
Owena was on the verge of tears, so Falk continued, somewhat reluctantly. "It's not a subject we enjoy discussing. I suppose it just . . . didn't come up." Falk shifted uncomfortably. "I'm sorry, Margaret. We should have told you."
The young, black-and-white mare was silent, trying to absorb and comprehend this new information.
_
"Margaret."
Margaret looked up from her book to see Owena standing in the doorway.
"I think you should start to study under Yuki. I know she's young, but she is very good at what she does." Owena walked closer to her daughter and her voice softened. "Yuki could help you learn to figure out what your and others' dreams mean . . . I must admit, I would also like to know."
Seeing the conflict in her mother's eyes, Margaret asked, "Are you sure? I wouldn't be studying under you anymore."
". . . Yes," Owena replied. She met Margaret's eyes. "I truly think this is what is best for you."
Margaret pondered her mother's proposition for a moment before nodding her approval.
_
Despite having a greater interest in her new area of study, Margaret is not making the progress she desires. Perhaps she is being too self-critical. No one else seems disappointed with her; all those who know her are impressed with her work ethic and praise her. Her mind keeps returning to the thought that she is doing something wrong, that she isn't good enough for some unknown reason. As her current life seems to stay at a standstill, she can't help but entertain other possibilities. Margaret is growing curious of the life outside Nariah, even life outside Sirith. She has read about the vast desert sands and snowy mountains. She has heard about vagabonds and pirates. Yet Margaret suppresses these thoughts, staying true to her duty. She knows venturing to the surface without approval is forbidden.
Patience, she reminds herself. Patience.
