Description Well bloody hell! and here was me thinking las month was difficult...

-------------------------

-JANUARY-

New Year’s celebrations were always big. The fireworks on the TV displayed the harbour bridge at its best and even in the barn most of the staff had dressed up, well at least some of the girls were in frocks while the boys wore clean pants!...

Several of the horses had joined in the party and it was with great amusement that several of the hands had decided to teach Undies how to toot a horn with surprising success. Other horses wore silly hats or ribbons.

Geoff stood, hat sitting jauntily on his head and a scowl on his face. The cause of his foul mood was standing right in front of him. Oscar or as he had managed to get the staff to call him ‘Ozzie’ was leaning against the wall, shirt open revealing some impressively muscled chest and a bucket load of tattoo’s flirting with his boss.

The young woman had taken a shine the man following his arrival at the training facility and while here had managed to get herself caught up in the chaos that had unfolded.

Margie had sent the fellow down after working with him in one of her latest projects. Second Chance was an organisation that took troubled youth from the system and placed them in environments that encouraged reform. Ozzie hadn’t mentioned much to the general staff however after a well timed call to the project Geoff had found some disturbing news about him.

The ex-soldier had dropped from training to be an officer and had taken to other less savoury tasks. Spending a month in prison hadn’t changed him though he had a few decent tats to show for it and a silent and unnerving stare to boot.

Margie assured Frankie he had no history of violence, nor had he stolen or swindled anyone however Geoff took more convincing. He watched the man like a hawk and as the fellow settled into life around the stable as a hand it seemed as though the first assessment was true, apart from a serious flirting problem.

It was with a heavy head he made his way to Caulfield for the first races of the season. Geoff sat next to Disco’s stall, listening on the radio as Peregrine ran for the first time this year.
The undefeated mare went into the Perth Cup the favourite and with clenched fists nearly broke into tears as the filly ran dead last and was lead off the track and straight to the vets. After a quick and desperate phone call to Betsy and the Gran who had flown over for the occasion to ensure the mares well being he tried to focus his wandering mind on Disco.

Jess noticed the trainers distracted mood and after repeating the same question three times she finally asked him what was wrong. Shaking his head the man snapped and told her to focus. Disco was dancing as usual and without any thought of her peoples strung out emotions she began to show the crowd exactly how good she felt.

Working herself up yet again Jess grinned scratching the mare’s neck as she sought to soothe the rambunctious filly as they waited to walk into the starting gate. Like a shot the bay scorched to the lead, skipping away to lead the pack by 3 lengths. Jess was smiling, the filly was in top form and she showed it setting blistering speeds early on and by the final turn had increased the distance to 5 lengths back to the nearest horse.

Caulfield had no idea what was about to happen. The undefeated filly tripped, almost in slow motion the crowd watched as the mares body betrayed her. Legs catching she struggled to halt the fall but landed legs flailing as she flipped over before coming to rest on her side, tail towards the finishing post. And then came the rest of the horses. The ground rumbled as Jess struggled to pull her body into a ball, watching as the thrashing legs drew closer.

It was due to immense skill on the parts of the other jockeys that the field came roaring out of the turn, each horse spinning wide to avoid the prone bodies ahead and with only one horse remaining the racers flashed past before crossing the post.

Stumbling upright and dazed from the fall Jess turned and hobbled towards the body of the filly. The seemingly endless energy that had coursed through her body had stopped, legs that flashed and danced lay still. Only the fillies eyes betrayed her fear as they darted, rolling pleading the woman.

Tears streaming down her face she knelt stroking the mares velvety muzzle and whispering encouragement. Geoff had sagged, losing the support in legs as he watched the accident and then stumbling towards the attendants as they struggled to contain the crowd.

Screens were erected around the horse as ambulances screeched to a halt nearby. Still unmoving and drenched in sweat the mare had lapsed into unconscious and only the flare of her nostrils and movement of her flanks showed life.

It took several minutes for Geoff to reach the mare and after a quick talk to the vet it was decided to do the unthinkable. Heartbroken the man reached once again for his phone and dialled the boss’ number.

Frankie cried, emotionally wrecked from the news of Peregrine she felt herself tremble in the office of the stud farm as Geoff told her the horror he had witnessed. BustaMoove had fallen, landing on her neck she had managed to break it and became paralysed. It had been decided to euthanize her and after the trainer had given his approval the now lifeless body that had been so full of fire mere minutes ago was taken off the track she loved so much.

It was a black day for KhanCohban racing and with everyone in depressed moods the news from W.A. only worsened the feel of the barn. A viral infection had been detected and within two days the mare was in such a bad state she was isolated and being kept at a specialist medical center.

Disco was buried under her favourite tree in the pasture at the training farm, her fresh grave marring the beautiful landscape and serving to remind the team of the mortality of the animals in their charge.

Peri was in for a fight, but the filly astounded staff at the Shady Oaks Equine Facility everyday with her strength and bright personality. As her fever lessened and the medication began to work its magic on her damaged and exhausted body she began the slow process of healing.

It seemed our horses were dropping like flies, with the death of Disco and Logan’s retirement our only remaining 4 year old had recovered and after slight bruising under where the cut was had vanished she was sent out to the track to begin to work back into shape once more.

Peregrine was shipped home and continued to gain energy and health day by day and as the hottest days of summer flew past the team had a short break. Moral was at an all time low and Ozzie was feeling the heat as the new guy and had often caught the sharp end of the normally gentle trainer. But it was to Geoff’s great amusement that another personality at the stable had taken a dislike to the man. Spawn first ran into the fellow when he had been sent to turn the colt out and muck his stall, the tattooed hulk was ejected from the stall with such speed and efficiency it brought to mind his sire. Grinning the wise old man watched the normally ice cold colt unleash a display of temper unheard of before. Lucifer was cracking.

Before we knew it was were once again headed to the races, Collie had been shipped to Tasmania for the Derby and Ark was in WA for the Detonator Stakes, but it was Undies who was to break from the gates first.

The spotted youngster broke slow, almost tripping over herself as she scrambled to get going, and as Betsy brought the young filly out they found themselves boxed in. Almost feeling the sweat dripping of the horses around her the jockey sat motionless all but her eyes that darted everywhere seeking desperately for the gap that would ensure space and a chance to run. The gap never came and it was Undies who ended up caught behind the fading pace horses as they charged down the strait only to finish 9th.

Hoping for a better result Ark was led onto the track in Perth where his painted playmate had been a month before. The chestnut colt was to break our streak and shone, roaring out of the turn to devour the leaders and march onto a 4 length lead.

Collie then stepped up in Hobart where she would meet some of the best three year olds in the state for the intense 11F race. Shooting away she fought of horse after horse before leading the field into the final two furlongs, digging deep Jess asked the gutsy girl to go and they flew, fighting off the closers only to fade just before the line where they were passed by the final three.

-FEBRUARY-

With Arks return heralded the evacuation of KhanCohban horses from Ascot for the rest of the season, and with Peri back in light work things began to look up for the string of horses about to hit tracks along the southern edge of the country.

In her first race since early December Esther had been showing alarming signs of fatigue, not physical as she was in better shape than ever but emotional. It seemed the more fire Collie gained the less fight the grey was willing to offer her track mate. Something that came to the fore in the Sunline Stakes where she ran a decent race but in an eerie manner seemed to be channelling Spawn’s current lack of drive.

It was up to Undies to uphold the reputation of the stud when she stepped onto the Mornington track. UndaCova danced her flashy body around the smaller track, cavorting her way into the gate before leaping out to chase the rabbits up front. Still raring to go after her frustrating last run she moved early with Betsy struggling to steady her, but it was too late and the filly burned out early allowing the leader to find a second wind and run away with her.

A week later found the team in Tasmania with Collie for the Launceston Cup. However a bruised hoof prevented the filly from racing and she was scratched the evening before much to the team’s disappointment.

Three days later, Racus and Ark were due to race at Caulfield while the enigma that was Spawn inhabited a stall at Morphettville.

The Futurity Stakes had some of the best milers in the country and with our kleptomaniac making her return we had good hopes. Her injury had healed perfectly and with no problems she had once again slotted right into training practices at the barn.

Her sleek body flitted around the track and with a touch from Jess she soared after the horses ahead. Unleashing the powerful mare Jess was crouched low, urging the painted filly forward but the wire loomed too fast and after all the effort the pair had made it to third though they didn’t slow until they had passed both horses in front of them.

Up next was Ark in the Caulfield Autumn Stakes, against his age group the chestnut performed admirably. His intense focus and willingness allowing Betsy to guide the stallion through the mass of bodies out of the turn to chase down the leader and in a photo finish that took ten minutes to determine. Our luck seemed to hold for the worse, and the other gelding snatched it by the slightest flare of a nostril.

Sighing we turned our faces to the TV coverage of the Tooheys New Stakes in Adelaide where Spawn was about to leave us gobsmacked.

The dark colt stood, still ice cold glaring around him. It seemed our New Year curse remained though when the colt loaded in and reared, bashing his head on the top of the gate and nearly falling backwards to land on Syd. Dazed and confused the youngster fought his way out of the metal trap before bolting away only to be caught by a very flustered outrider.

Head in hands the team led the bruised boy back to the barn and onwards home, where a very worried Geoff looked at the horses and fought off a migraine.

Depressing much... i still can beleive we lost Disco! one of the moments i wished i didn't obey the RNG's but after the third odd number i gave in and listened.

God DAMNIT. I'm more angry than I am sad. Fer real.
I really wanted a foal from this mare like you can't believe. I had planned the sire, even the foal's stats and I had the world's most perfect name for it. CRAP CRAP CRAP.

sadness! i had several breedings planned for her too...

Im so intrigued now though! pray tell who this sire was and maybe even the name of this unborn baby? dammit... one of the downsides of being realistic...

Hazel-rah In reply to sealle [2010-09-05 14:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's not the name that's so epic (though, it is nifty and fitting), but more the story and stats that went with the character. x.x;
It was probably going to be Ghost Pirate as the sire, and the foal would've been named Ghostbuster. x) How cute? Would've made a killer sprinter, too. Anyway, yeah, my dreams shattered. I'll get over it.

1) DISCOOOOO! WEEE! I love Disco! I swear, she's like the face of KhC for me. I don't even know why.
2) Horn tooting Undies. THAT AMUSES ME.
3) O_O What happened to Peri?? *flail*
4) I... I... Omg. OMG NOOOOO NOT DISCO. *sobs* Literally! Tears are streaming down my face!

Being buried under her favorite tree reminds me a lot of my Reckless.

5) Spawn is starting to amuse me, though. I knew that Diablo fire was in there somewhere! (DISCO *SOBS*)
6) Spawn. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU YOU CRAZY LITTLE MAN.
7) DISCOOOO WAAAAAH.
