I had that paw looking perfect BEFORE painting it... trying to recover it after the first layer of paint ruined it... I was planning to cheat and cut it out in Photoshop, but then I figured that kind of ruined the whole zen of painting XD

All around excellent. I like how you made the tails towards the viewer, fanning them out to imply seeing the main subject through fire. I also love the wild nape fur.

I'll have to get (yet another) set of watercolors to try that out. and btw, while it's on my mind, what kind of paper have you been using? jc, because I've come to the conclusion that I hate strathmore, can tolerate canson, but like arches... which is naturally hellishly expensive... hopefully you have magical knowledge of the shangri-la of watercolor paper? *looks hopeful*

Strathmore is the absolute worst paper on the market, yes... Arches is very nice, but tends to get pulpy on me and also smells like rotting vegetibles which is unsettling. The best paper I've found is Canson Montval watercolor paper. it comes in blocks, or single sheets just like Arches, but takes abuse better and costs a few bucks less. I find that cold press works the best.

that's the kind of canson I've been using, but I've been having a problem with the colors lifting up and redepositing with each successive wash--even (especially) when I allow the layer to dry, then rework it. >.< Has that been happening to you, or is this just a personal problem? lol

yah, the colors tend to life off the paper... but that also give it a lot of reworkability. I don't find it too difficult to layer the colors, but just dont't try to blot at that point.
