Description One of my favorite fairy tale figures is Baba Yaga, an old witch who lives in an enchanted forest, rides a mortar instead of a broom, lives in a house with chicken legs and usually has three magical sons. I have an obsession with witches in general, but something about this old Russian spell caster really captures my imagination.

I think one day i’d like to write about the adventures of her youth. How she became powerful and delightfully evil (although she is good in a couple of tales). So, here you go, young Baba Yaga (who would have a different name, since Baba means old woman. Maybe just Yaga?).

I kind of have a witch obsession myself, lol. I've been studying Baba Yaga, because I'm writing a story that involves her.

Wow, okay, that looks great, like a really really dark rapunzel or something with all those skulls. Nice and simple dress and design, very elegant and the hair just has lovely details, you've done it so well. I like the hair through the eye sockets too, they've gotta stay attached somehow!

This is beautiful and interesting concept.Β

About 3 sons- in original story they're servants. Yet Baba yaga was originaly Slavic deity, Mother Nature, and given her servants are day,Sun and night.... Β  There are also stories where there are 2 riders, black one-Earth itself, and white one-sky.

I had never heard about old Yaga having any sons. Who are they? Are they the three riders that Vasilisa comes across in the forest, the ones that bring night, dawn, and sun?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

secondlina In reply to Arianod [2013-11-25 03:41:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I read a French translation that referred to them as her "sons" once. So, meh.

Arianod In reply to secondlina [2013-11-25 14:24:04 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting. I only know a Spanish translation in which they're called the "servants" of the witch. I'll have to check that out!

I know in the comic "Fables" they are referred as sons too? But I think they mean in the "I created you" way.

Oh, if that is the case. Do you by chance read an online comic called Hemlock. The main key points of the story revolves around Baba Yaga and her 3 sons. I think you might like it, and if you do read it then don't mind me.

You probably know that, but the motif of Baba Yaga was very nicely rendered in a fabulous webcomic called 'Hemlock'. Your Yaga seems much more vigorous, though

the amazing thing is that when I was looking at my devfeed and saw this I thought "wow, this could be a really great interpretation of baba yaga".
You got her essence somehow, even if you depicted her as a young woman I really really love all the stories where she is!

Oh gosh. I looked at it zoomed in and the sword almost looks like it could double as scissors, which made me think of this really creepy German story about the scissor man who cut off the thumbs of kids who ignored their parents and sucked on their thumbs. It was a pretty gruesome story. Along with the rest of the stories in that book. Actually, it wasn't that bad, because he only lost his thumbs. In most of the stories the kid dies. And my dad read me these when I was a toddler. Oh well. They never bothered me.
