Description German nobleman Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von Münchhausen was born in the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg and followed his patron Anton Ulrich Prinz von Braunschwig-Wolfenbüttel to Russia when the latter was appointed Generalissimo of the Army of the Russian Empire in 1739; Münchhausen became a cornet in the Russian imperial cavalry and served until 1750, having achieved the rank of Rittmeister (captain of cavalry). He was known for his spectacular feats and colorful adventures, to include riding cannonballs and mortar shells, travelling to the Moon, wooing Venus, being swallowed whole by a sea monster, extracting himself and his trusty steed Bucephalus from the ocean by pulling on his own hair, and lifting a Turkish siege near single-handedly before suffering the latest in a series of deaths. He appears here as depicted in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, wearing a red coat with epaulettes and aiguillette with a gilt tricorne and a cavalry saber.

This particular version of Baron Munchausen (sic) is property of Columbia Pictures.
