Well, given that it's Disney, I'm not entire sure if those were intentional cub spots or just markings. If that was the case, then Simba would possibly have them as a cub and then they would disappear as an adult. So I just decided to leave them there.

As creative as that sounds a lion and hyena wouldn't genetically be able to have offspring; they are of different taxonomic families. Example: a lion and a leopard can have offspring (they're both big cats) and a German shepherd and a wolf can as well (they're both canines). While hyenas and lions aren't from opposite spectrums of the mammal gene pool, they aren't close enough to reproduce.
