Based on drawings by Preston Blair.

If you know how to draw and understand, it is not difficult to make this type of animation

Excellent work! Preston Blair has started to become the inspiration for my animations, and it still baffles me how he can animate so smoothly, so fluently, almost like it's animated in 3D! Great job!

Well, you should draw based on when a sequence.
For example, it can be found in the book of Preston Blair.
First. You must draw the character, planting the figure. Avoiding the feet do not move. Move the center of balance and hands beside the ax.
As you can see the character takes a step forward to support the momentum that produces the action of cutting the trunk. In the book are the key drawings, I've added some more, so that the animation runs smoothly. That is, create intermediate drawings. Always intermediate should describe curved movements, usually

I see. I use a scanner and photoshop or Gimp. I make a PSD (in grey scale) with all layer (all frames). And import this file, in Azdrawing. Remember that this document, must be in grey scale for to open in Azdrawing. In this software, you can setup the speed your animation. Azdrawing is my fouvorite program for make sketch with Wacom tablet and test my animations. Also, becouse is free and have a great sensible trace like a real pencil. I test all soft for drawings, I think that is the better for sketchs.

i see, well this method is working with digital animations, i thought you do your animations on paper, i kinda wanted to know how the traditional method you use to make those test lines , but thanks for info i'll try this Azdrawing out

Actually, use both techniques. For the most part, are made the traditional way, with light table for tracing paper. Drawing with HB pencil.
You could also do it with graphics tablet. But to me, it makes me slower. Why Tablet use correct or do more to paint animation backgrounds.
For now use the traditional technique.
The software mentioned by lifting the scanner use.
And Azdrawing, I run the animation. And if I have to correct, correct them.

i was thinking of how did you make the pencil test as in how do you record them? , do you use a camera or something or you just scan them in??

All animations are scan. No I have a good camera. But if you have a good camera. Your record will most peed and better. I supouse.

In some studies of animation. They use a camera, with a distance of approximately 1 meter. Paper registers in a table (pegbar). The camera must be above and must have good focus and choke to regulate the light, and with a program, for example, the DigiCel FlipBook. You take some pictures. The can get up and see the animation in this program and test your animation.
Here I show you how it towards my animation tutor
