Description
The Grumman E-1 Tracer was a modification of the S-2 Tracker antisubmarine warfare aircraft, meant as a replacement for the older and not as effective EA-1 Skyraider. The E-1 moved the radar above the aircraft, which eliminated problems with the radar being masked by the aircraft itself, as well as being more aerodynamic. The radome was fixed (unlike the modern E-2 Hawkeye and E-3 Sentry, in which it moves). Since the S-2 was known as the "Stoof" to its crews, the E-1 became known as the "Stoof With a Roof"; its initial designation before 1962 was the W2F-1, leading to its other nickname, the "Willy Fudd."

This E-1 is preserved aboard the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) in Charleston, SC. It would've operated with VAW-11 during the time my dad was aboard. This one is in need of a new coat of paint and markings, but the Yorktown Foundation is getting to it when funding permits.
