Description
She had been running as far as her legs would carry her, lungs burning with every breath, open wounds stinging, but neither could compare to the pain growing in her chest. This feeling was new to her, and she did not know how to bear it. With trembling legs she finally fell to the ground in the shadow of a large tree. She had nothing left to give, and night was already falling around her. The night had never scared her before, she had never had reason to fear. But everything was different now. There was no one there to guard her through the night.
She knew there were dangers lurking out there in the shadows, her mother had taught her all about that, and she knew that she should really find better shelter than this. But she was just so tired. Tired of running and of being afraid, of pain and of her aching heart. She welcomed sleep when it came, hoping it would relieve her of the horrors she had faced. Maybe she would wake up and find it had all been a bad dream. Or maybe she would not wake at all. Right now, it did not matter to her.

At dawn she woke from her slumber, tears still in her eyes. Dreams had filled her night. She could not remember the nature of these dreams, but something of them still lingered in the air and filled her with a sense of comfort and warmth. A flower lay next to her, she noticed, soft white petals and a center glowing yellow as the sun. Carefully she picked it up with her trunk, lifting it to the sky and smiling at the sight.
She didn't know why, and she didn't know how, but in that moment she knew. She was going to survive this. She was going to live.

For NinjaKato 's contest; Pipi the elephant and her departed mother Amari.
Having recently gone through the process of losing someone dear, I found this very therapeutic to work on.

I chose to base this on the song Memories by Within Temptation.
If you look closely at the tree, you'll see the faces of the Kodama (tree spirits) from Princess Mononoke, as a little Studio Ghibli fandom reference. It was difficult to figure something out that wouldn't distract from the scene or that would look terribly out of place, but I hope this is ok

I used various photos for references, and to really get into the proper mood, I watched a documentary about Echo the elephant. This is the first time I draw elephants, so it was a fun challenge. I have become very fond of these animals lately!
