Oh shit, Crippling Self-Doubt is hiding beneath Abe Lincoln's hat! Quick, Joe, punch that sucka in the face!

AUGH! I feel that way and I don't have any stories ready for either. I ought to look into small press to find something. I have so many opportunities, they're all so daunting. I keep imagining them being failures and a waste of money. My friends tell me they like my work, but none of them create. Man, I'm going to draw me kicking low self-esteem in the balls.

The fact that you've kept up with these comics is proof that you've got your stuff more together than I do. I am writing a song that I call "Cheesy Motivational Song" - I am very original when it comes to titles - and I would like to sing you part of the chorus.
And so you punch life
Right in the face
For trying to keep you down
Give life a roundhouse
To his fat chops
To prove that you're still the baddest mother around
Heed my lyrics, Joe. Heed them, and deliver a swift and hammering elbow to the solar plexus of life, that smug bastard.
But seriously, it's perfectly normal, everyone feels it, blah blah blah everyone before has said it more eloquently than me.

This needs to be a real song.
And I am totally gay for you in the most flamingly heterosexual fashion possible. Thanks man.

You kidding? The small press/mini-comics scene has absolutely no place in New Mexico! And thats what I'm working with! I feel you brother, but we ALL have to just keep pushing thru!
(And possibly work several jobs just to make it happen...)

Not much of a place in Ohio either.
If you can swing it somehow, you should totally go to SPX in September! It's like summer camp for comic nerds!

Yeah, I've seen you mention it at some other point... Anyway I looked it up then and I really have to check it out! However, doing Cartoon Summer workshop this year (i.e. spending lots of money), so maybe I can swing it next year? I'm going to try to make a few conventions next year, so that could be an option.
I could book my plane ticket super early in advance for next year... (thinking in the form of typing...)

Everyone starts somewhere. And you're not doing anything wrong. Artistically, you're right on. You can go either way with the webcomic or small press thing. Or you can do both. But that's nothing to do with doing something wrong. That's just about committing to a specific course of action in terms of selecting a method to market yourself.

Dude, just judging from the comments you get on these journalin comics here on DA, you've got more of a readership than my webcomic does. Just because somebody has a website, or is selling mini-comics doesn't mean a thing.
That said, I am many a day sitting on the train feeling the same way and wishing the dinosaur comics would share a few viewers.

I think most of the reason I like comics is for the art. So minus that, I'm kinda bored.

I'm so sick of Abe Lincoln lording his mini-comics over me. What a jerk.
And no not ridiculous. I always felt the same way doing my comics.

you're an awesome artist with great journally things.
honestly, I read every single one and get excited when there's a new one, lol
also, I kinda think of your journals as a type of webcomic, don't know if that helps :]

man, i feel like this sometimes. you assume that just cos everyone else isnt you, that they're not struggling with how they feel about their work because when you look at their work all you think is 'wow!'
the truth is, i think even the greatest artists can see all the flaws in their own work, want to improve and never feel settled and 'all together' like they make it look!
your work is top, and hilariously, when i look at your stuff I think, now there's a guy who is settled and whacking out some rad comix!
dont worry man...

Please know that you started me doing a visual journal. I was so inspired by your short comics that I decided to try my own version. And I thought yours were much better than mine. You've got talent, you have a great style, and you have patience, which is more than a lot of artists I know can say. You're doing it right.

Not a bit.
Take it from a webcomics guy: I feel the same way looking at the small press folks, the pro comic folks and some of the outstanding cartoonists here and elsewhere. Shoot, I get that feeling looking at your work. It's a place we all hit every now and again.
The question becomes what do you do with that feeling? Once I pull myself out of that funk, I get back to work. As long as I keep on keeping on, I'll get better/quicker/more organized. If I stop, I'm done.
