Description I just read Speaker for the Dead, of the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. Great series, I really recommend it. In the book, Ender's in his mid-thirties, somewhat peaceful, and has memories from over 3000 years ago. So I wanted to make his eyes look old, and yet have his body young.

This drawing was a 'cloud practice', where I just practiced drawing scenery, the sky, and birds. I'm rather happy with the finished product.

Oh god, I LOVED that series to death, and to think that there would be Ender's Game fanart on dA!

And even if I didn't know this series, I still would have loved this picture simply because of the amazing perspective you have there. That head angle is also very hard to draw, and you pulled it off wonderfully.

I remember being super ultra proud of this picture when I first drew it, but now not so much XD It's weird cause once in a while I still get pictures of people who like it and it's really refreshing every time.

I never thought to come across other Ender fans while messing about on DeviantArt. Huzzah!

Sorry, I'm not enough of an artist to give a proper critique.

I'm sure you'll find em if you look. I guess there's not much art of it though, it's a bit of an "semi-intellectual" book, hard to draw stuff from for us visual peoples.

I think the sheer height from the top of the picture, with the circling birds, works very well in symbolizing the years he's seen. It's as if he's looking back through them....and the space is a long one. (I was suddenly seized by the desire to see fanart of Ender Wiggin, and your picture stood out from the rest.)

Nice job.

Wow! I'm quite happy to recieve your comment, though I wasn't thinking of any symbolism when I first drew it, I'm glad that people can interpret a picture in different ways. Thanks!

Great depiction of a middle aged but 30,000 year old ender, i am guessing from the sky with birds that he isn't on Lusitania here?

Would you be willing to submit this peace to the gallery on our Enderverse community site: [link] ?

Sure, I would be flattered. Uh, I was kind of vague about where I choose the setting to be, and I haven't read the series recently enough to be able to answer your question accurately, ehheh. I've been planning to redo this picture for a while because of the skewed anatomy.

I really like your picture - I think it conveys the spirit of Ender/and the whole series very well. I like it so much that I made it my background and am interested in making part of it my gmail buddy icon. Seeing as you copyrighted it at the bottom and gmail has policies on that kind of thing, I decided it would be best to ask your permission. Is it ok if I use part of your picture as my gmail icon? Thanks.

Thank you! Thank you for drawing anything Ender. This so amazing and the colours are incredible. It's exactly how I imagined Lusitania. Yay. Mean old Card though, makes you fall in love with every one of his characters.

Er, thank you XD. I'm glad you like it - this picture doesn't get much traffic compared to my others, but I've always liked it the most. I like Card's characters, they're so 3-d.

Thank you, your comment means a lot to me. Speaker for the Dead was a great book imo, but I personally don't think the rest from "Ender's Side" are up to par. I own them all anyway .

I always like these kind of angles. (: The birds are hecka nice~

Is this kind of... scratchy style (lol I have no idea what it's called) simply your style? Or are you too lazy to like... blur/smear/blend? o_O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serain In reply to chibi-kiwi [2006-08-18 04:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Birds were taken off a photo! Nothing like reference (read: blanant tracing) to make your drawings look better!

Er? Scatchy style? That's just me being too stupid to know how to make it look neat. And since people seem to like neat things, hopefully this will be corrected soon.

My brain has already rotted from summer inactivity, but I will try my best to leave a decent comment.

The flow of this piece is very nice :] I nearly fell out of my chair looking at it. But what bothers me is his neck. The way you shaded it made it look like his head was hollow and the neck was inside the head or something O.o But I really love the colors, and the detail of the background *o* I would sell my soul for drawing skills half as good as yours X__x

Wow. Well, like everyone else, the neck seems sort of...odd...to me. BUT zomg I can't believe you had the balls to do that. I sure as hell wouldn't've. And the perspective on those clouds...is SO nice.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serain In reply to BonnieLass [2006-06-14 05:18:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for your comment. I don't know what the hell to do with the neck...I think it's werid as well. If only I knew what to do with it. Prehaps I will learn one day. And as ~sophiac said below, :devAquasixo: has a really good cloud tutorial.

I've always wanted to make dynamic, interesting pictures. Hopefully this is the first step in the right direction.
