Description For #fireemblem-club 's contest.

The thing is - I really like his official design and feel that there's not much to be improved on, so instead of just stripping the characters down or just hanging some random bangles off them, I decided to do a more realistic take on the old outfit. FE outfits are generally more decorative than practical (just look at those sword designs... good god) and while having only one shoulderguard is fashionable... it is not so good for fighting.

Ike is strange because he is simutaneously underdressed and overdressed. I was confused as to him completely lacking covering on his arms and yet is wearing too many tunics and belts with gigantic buckles.

So. Added hauberk (chainmail), worn under tunic - a gorget, paudron and several other pieces. Vambraces and the other arm bits I've seen on other characters (the artist really does his research when he is drawing) - and some of the other designs I haven't. Swords can be worn without sheaths, especially on top of chainmail. I decided against a breastplate for mobility.

Yes, he has a helmet, which is something he realistically should have. The crest of Crimea is on it. I wanted to go LotR on his cape - the twist thing he has right now always really confused me - but I didn't do a good job of showing the weight of such heavy fabric because I was too busy making it blow around. Went simple on the swords too. We all know that Ike doesn't need some fancy-schmancy gilded sword with a gigantic rock on it and +1 million to each stat to kick ass (I'm looking at you, Roy).

I think Ike is a pretty cool guy. eh fights mad kings and doesn't afraid of anything.

I love this kind of thing. Costume design in Fire Emblem is something that I've both enjoyed and struggled to understand, before. I like this design.
I do think that the gardbrace (or whatever you call that big thing on his shoulder) seems a little bit inflexible, but it does make him look cool, so ++. I very much like the knife, but I don't know about the third sword.

Nice piece, and I like the thought behind it! Give us more!

It should be fine. It was reffed right off something that actual swordfighters wore so I didn't really think about it.

The third sword is in case the first one breaks! Don't tell me you didn't load your characters down with a veritable skirt of weapons.

I thought about doing an elincia. I might go through with it. Those prizes look awesome.

Never seen the sword of seals, but generally, I find the weapons in the FE series to be fairly decent.

What I find ridiculous is the armour. Fer guys, it's usually those mountainous shoulder pads with the overlarge crests- that's a lack of mobility if there ever was one. And the girls is the age-old less-is-more formula that is wont of any fantasy female. I usually try to have practicality come first and foremost when I design sumthin', but oftentimes I'll just throw in stuff to be more in keeping with the FE style.

Anyways, good-o on the changes made here. The lack of sheathes bothers me summat, since there is no indication of his legs being protected from the blades, and there is no guarantee that the swords won't simply cut the belt right off. The helmet seems out of place as well- despite that others have helmets very similar to such... perhaps it is simply that the point is less pronounced.

In any case- very well done. Very refreshing departure from the series usual fare.

Hahaha. The sword of seals is hilarious. I think the farther back you go with FE games, the sillier the weapons are. Marth's shield always brings me to tears.

Apparently swords actually were worn like that, so I personally didn't question it. I doubt it would be in any position to slice someone's leg though, considering it can't bend inward over the chainmail. Besides, medevail to renaissance swords weren't really ultra sharp like their japanese counterparts, they were used to bludgeon as often as cut.

Thank you for the nice and thoughtful comment!

Think nothing of it. Upon further perusal of your gallery, it is quite evident that you are very talented. I can only but admire your versatility between various styles.

Aw, thanks

I'll probably do an elincia too. It will be more dramatic because she will be sans princess dress, so watch out for that.

The Princess in her birthday suit? No complaints there.

Excellent, excellent. His one shoulderplate always bugged me. In fact, the sheer impracticality of pretty much EVERY FE costume bugs me.

Oh, and simple swords. THANK YOU.

They generally do their research when it comes to costume design, I think. I'm certainly happy with it - better than the chicks flouncing about with a thong or garter holding up an entire sword as well as sheath.

The swords is where it gets me. Look at the sword of seals (roy's sword). LOOK AT IT. I have never seen a more gaudy piece of crap in my life. Ragnell is a definite improvement but still kind of ridiculous in size and heft.

I looove the offical design. I really do. This is just IRL Ike I guess.

Awesome. I'm thinking the far pauldron is a bit stiff for a sword-wielder, though. It's a little big, and it'd restrict movement some - not what you'd want when you move your arms around a lot.

Huh. I see what you mean, but it should be fine. It has a lot of moveable plates so he still should be able to move fairly quickly and should generally be able to deflect glancing blows (since he is fighting with that arm). Better than getting a sword through the shoulder anyway.

I lieks a lot - even though chainmail isn't exaaaactly in the FE fashion normally. But it should be; always wondered why there weren't more chainmeail / helmeted people. (probably detracts from all the hotness that FE is famed for. xD )

Are the two smaller swords dirks? It'd be awesome to see Ike have those two when his sword breaks and go ragey-awesome.

Thanks. The smaller one is indeed a dirk, the other one is just a regular arming sword. He'd probably be able to use them in some serious double-fisted skull smashing though.

I am also curious about the lack of chainmail and helmets. I think the NPCs get them, so I'll know if I'm ever trapped in FE-verse to never wear a helmet.
