Operation Downfall was a real operation. It was planned as the Allied invasion of mainland Japan. After the American island-hopping campaign ended with the capture of Okinawa, the British and American commanders figured they would need to invade mainland Japan. It was calculated that just the United States alone would lose over one million men in during the operation, with the British and Canadians losing similar numbers and the Japanese losing millions of military personnel and civilians. Despite the high numbers, the operation might have happened if nuclear weapons weren't invented or weren't ready in time (bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki). The Soviet Union was likely to invade from the north, starting with the island of Hokkaido. If they did, the casualty numbers would have been comparable to the Japanese (maybe less) and we would've had both a North and South Japan, similar to North and South Korea and East and West Germany during the Cold War (a North-South Wall or DMZ possible?).
Which, by the way, the M6A2E8 is fake although it was based on the real M6 heavy tank from 1941. Everything else did exist, with the T34 being the only vehicle to not see service.

I'm quite aware of the plan, that and it would definitely cripple Japan at the very least; though I do ask if you heard of the TL I just mentioned earlier?
