Description
Based on the successes of the Sturmgeschütz III and IV, the Sturmgeschütz VI Sturmtiger was built as a tank destroyer and assault gun built on the hull of the Tiger I heavy tank. In the TD role, it was an interim solution until a new vehicle could be built. In the assault gun role, it was seen as a way to use retired Tiger I hulls rather than designing a new vehicle. The frontal armor was upgraded to about 150-170mm of effective thickness through both an increase in RHA and the sloping of the casemate. There were three variants of the Sturmtiger made, with the first tank entering service on June 5th, 1945.

- Sturmgeschütz VI ausf. A

Prototype and initial production variant. Casemate based off the Jagdpanzer V Jagdpanther, being heavily sloped. About 35 made, entering service in early June 1945. All models built saw effective service.

- Sturmgeschütz VI ausf. B

Main production variant, with the casemate being based off early Sturmgeschütz III variants. Over 400 made, with the first entering service in mid-August 1945.

- Sturmgeschütz VI ausf. B mit 10.5cm PaK 45 L/86

A proposed variant of the Sturmtiger armed with a 10.5cm PaK L/86 anti-tank gun, which would make it a heavy tank destroyer. Never made it past the drawing board, as it was deemed unnecessary with the new heavy TD design, based on the VK.45.02 (P) hull , was successful in tests and about to enter service.

- Sturmhaubitze 45

Close support howitzer variant of the Sturmtiger, made by replacing the 8.8cm PaK 43 L/38 with the 15cm sIG 33 howitzer in a modified mount. Entered service shortly after Sturmtiger ausf. A.
