I'm once again participating the MythicMay challenge organized by Audre Schutte! This year I will just be doing creature designs in the way that feels most natural to me, drawing inspiration from creatures in real life.

This nature spirit of the mandrake plant is said to be born from a soul of a buried murderer. While above ground it remains a normal mandrake plant, it's roots are a humanoid demon figure. When pulled out from the ground it emits a scream fatal to those who hear it. This lore resulted in the unfortunate practise of tying dogs to the plants and forcing them to uproot the 'demonic' plants. The plant is popular with herbalists and alchemists, despite the fact that it causes lunacy in large quantities.

You say "demonic humanoid figure" I say monster rodent. My thought process was basically "wrinkly, hairless creature that lives underground, is considered demonic and has a funny growth on its head? Yeah that's the love child of a naked mole rat and a star-nosed mole". I can guarantee that this creature will scream and try to bite you if you pull if from the ground thinking it's a plant.
