I'm once again participating the MythicMay challenge organized by Audre Schutte! This year I will just be doing creature designs in the way that feels most natural to me, drawing inspiration from creatures in real life.

In Icelandic folklore there are tales of ghosts of newborns. In lean times desperate mothers would sometimes leave their newborns to the harsh elements. The souls of these children took on the appearance of a raven, moving on one knee and one hand. Their color is that of the clothes they died wrapped in. They haunt their mothers and howl during storms.

This myth reminded me of a similar one in Finnish mythology, the folk beliefs related to willow grouse. In this interpretation of the utburdur I wanted to try to incorporate some elements from the myth into the creature and not just make a plain raven. I made the face and its patterns appear different, as something that could be mistaken for an infant's head from afar. The coloration was inspired by some woolly clothing that I think an infant could have been wrapped in. Creepy detail when you think about it.
