Description
Gyarados for Nuzlocke forum's "Draw Every Pokemon" -project. I love Gyarados so I just had to call it.
I decided to use the Japanese style instead of my usual semi-realistic style. Gyarados is one of those Pokemon I think would look great in Japanese style and I was right. Personally I think this came out really nicely. The style is a little different from the one I've been using but I thought this style would fit better. Also, I decided to leave the background empty because otherwise the picture might've been too crammed.

Thanks! I was trying to imitate the Japanese Ukiyo-E style in this painting by using traditional media. I've also done many other Japanese art inspired paintings in case you're interested. :>

I mostly used watercolours and an ink brush. Nowadays I prefer to paint with inks, though. I made a tutorial on how I made some of the pieces, it explains the materials and the process more thoroughly and I made a process video of one of the more recent pieces that I have painted with inks:

Ok, is this seriously a four-year-old piece? This is amazing! You've really done well capturing the terror of gyarados's demeanour, this thing looks like a beast. The dark, shadowy details around its eyes and between its segments do a fantastic job of making this monster look deadly, and you made brilliant use of the narrow rectangular shape of the canvas by having its serpentine body stretch across the picture, its coils scraping the edge of each side as if it can't be contained by this picture's boundaries. Love how you've given it finlike extensions on the tips of its barbells, really neat idea. This creature is clearly a force to be reckoned with, and you've done a fantastic job showing that through and through!

It would be nice to do another Gyarados piece in my improved style. It'd be different from this, definitely, but it'd make a nice comparison in many ways.

Gyarados is one of my favorites from back in the Red, Blue, & Yellow days.
If I'd get this inked, I'd go with a whole Magikarp transitioning into Gyarados thing.Β

That is actually a super cool idea. I might borrow it and if I decide to make another Gyarados painting in this style I'll use the transition idea. The concept behind the entire evolution and the myth it's based on is so neat. It should be interesting to portray.
