Beutiful. I like the contrast on both sides from him to the background. Well done on the shading, highlites, and texture in his skin. I hope that one day, i will be able to have half the melodic control he does in his solos, always my fav guitarist, and band. Great piece, awesome job, my friend.
Wish you were here, was the first song I forced myself to practice untill i could play it.

Thanks! Yeah, he doesn't do much in the way of technical fireworks, but he's always very musical.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragontech22 In reply to shalpin [2006-09-02 01:34:57 +0000 UTC]

The fireworks are in his ability to make the most beutiful melodies come out in his solos. Guitar greatness is not in speed alone. I'm sure he could do the hardcore pentatonic licks if he chose to, i just don't think its his style. Great work, again.

I like how the background edges give it a natural look.. kinda like gilmour. The only thing is the bottom part... i think it should be smoother/ rounded like the top and sides. Very well done though. Good Job.

shalpin In reply to Lohgz [2006-08-31 04:17:41 +0000 UTC]

I went back to it after your comment - I think I see, but maybe I prefer the rougher edges. Perhaps I should have done all the edges as rough? I appreciate the feedback though - you don't often get comments telling you how to improve things and it's really useful. Thanks!

I'd have to guess from your ID, Icon, and favorite band/musician in your profile, that you like David Gilmour

Thanks - the subject was as close as I could get to the photo, the background ... well that was going to be the same as the photo, but I got a bit frustrated at the time it was taking so I left it lighter

Excellent portrait, you've drawn the side on lighting so well and the eyes are so alive

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shalpin In reply to 2Funki4Wheelz [2006-08-30 18:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou. I felt a bit guilty - the original background was much darker, so it makes the lighting a bit more sense (reversed direction from the figure). I think even with the high contrast, I would have been better doing the background crossover at the top of the head ... but that's for another picture and another day

I've always loved David Gilmour. I think he's my favorite PF member. He was so beautiful in his younger days. He is aging gracefully and can still play a mean guitar... hope you've seen the live concert DVD. Such a tremendous performance... brought tears to my eyes. Seriously.

Nice draw!

I haven't seen the DVD - I'd like to though. He manages to put a lot of emotion into a very economical style.

Yes, I've been listening to it a lot recently had a tip that if you are going to draw a celebrity, put a video of theirs on while you draw, I guess the same goes for musicians.

"You run and you run to catch up with the sun
But it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way
But you're older...."
The title made me think of that song. Though, it is a common theme in much Pink Floyd's music . Time.

Great drawing- wonderful use of contrast for effect!

very well drawn, the deep shadows and lighting are superbly done.

shalpin In reply to RTyson [2006-08-22 18:23:21 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou. I was thinking I should have carried the background gradient dark area to the top of the head, so that it would be the opposite to the lighting of the head. But I got lazy.

It came out a bit contrasty as well, as I tweaked the scan to try and make it look a bit more like the original and all the light areas burned out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RTyson In reply to shalpin [2006-08-22 18:30:23 +0000 UTC]

I like the background as it is. It's a bit frustrating when a scan alters your pic and you can't show it as it really is, but even the naughty scanner couldn't stop this from being a great piece.

Another terrific piece from you, Steve! I don't know this man, or even the type of music he plays, but I've heard of the name of the band. But that doesn't matter because you've done a fantastic job with this drawing!

shalpin In reply to Aprilart [2006-08-22 18:17:57 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou. You'll have to add it to the list of music to listen to - I'll recommend "The great gig in the sky" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"

How's He Is coming on? Finished it yet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to shalpin [2006-08-23 02:04:17 +0000 UTC]

Now don't get sassy, my dear! "He Is" finished??? HA!!! I wish! However I keep working at it and am almost close to adding an update. As the shirt is quite boring I don't like to update the WIP as often.

I'll have to listen to these songs. I remember like 15 years ago they were quite popular among the kids I knew, but I never cared to listen to find out about them. I was a weird kid!
