Description Advertisements set the cultural standards of beauty.

Asians are a highly under represented minority. Where are we in the media? If we're not doing martial arts or fitting some other stereotype, we're invisible.

And if we are invisible in the media, then are we outside the cultural defintion of beauty?

Yeah man!!! beauty. It so funny that the beauty that is define 10 years ago is so different now. Don't you find it amusing that it could just be determine by some stupid French guy in his office.

Great interpretation of social norms!

Beautiful girl. I think the most pretty girls are Asian and Polish.
People very like stereotypes and they will belive in them long time before something will change.

Asians are *definitely* under represented ... it's sad really. Asian women have such lovely features. Take Lucy Liu for example ... or yourself.

Nice concept. I agree. I'm Chinese and I love Chinese beauties best. Not meant to be racist, because each race has its unique and distinct beauty. But in my case, I like Oriental (specifically Chinese and Japanese) best. Great concept and lovely visual!

I remember when I took a photo of A girl I found not only beautiful, but an infectious sense of humor about her. When I had shown the photos to my father, he said "you wasted your film on some f**king s***c?" The brain in my head screeched like the tires of a car braking! I took a photo of someone I found appealing to me no matter who or what she was. You can take a stab as to what her race is. I don't care! Although I don't think the photos do not do her justice, I will be posting one of her pictures soon!
I say to you, a very well said statement in visual form! Keep it up! And thank you!

I believe that the Asian kind of beauty is expanding towards the U.S. media, thou it is very stereotyped. And I dont know if this will be either good or bad, because it can cover the true image of Asian models (like merchandising the school-girl type) or grow into true interest for Asia's culture (like spreading pictures of traditional clothings).

Anyway, beautiful shot

YOu have a 80% reason, why? Because there are "standards" that people like asians or latins (like me) "don't" get them, and thats the because we're not on a non stereotyped media

Good concept. Apparently your right. Sadly, what is seen and considered as "asian" in western media are only ones with chink eyes, if you are asian, you automatically are stereotyped into such. Filipinos, Malays, Indonesians, etc. rarely break out into such scenes and if they do they only get to be as extras or token people... And what really is painful is that if the females of these cultures get featured, they are merely as objects of sensual pleasure. As "eye-candies" being exploited... Well, I do hope this made sense in a way. Again, good concept.

Hmmm DA bugs... I guess I just had one too many cups of coffee and watched too much TV and started making sense at last.

I'm not exactly sure if it is ignorance or just plain superiority complex that drives these media people to portray asians as such, but with more effort in the part of asians to show a different side of them, it could be possible to break away from all the stereotyping. Obviously, it shouldn't be like those National Geographic documentaries, as those seem to show cultures in a zoo like fashion. Well, in my opinion at least.

Damn, more coffee and I'll start to talk like a politician... Oh well...

great pic. interesting concept and beautifully executed. know exactly what you mean about media's treatment of minorities in general and asians in particular. i have several asian friends who are actors, and the roles they get in mainstream productions tend to be token or stereotypical. anyway, thank you for the thought-provoking and beautiful picture.

SHANGHAi In reply to Skalos [2007-06-10 06:22:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much Yeah, the more I look at actors' roles in movies, the more I realize the Asian ones tend to have "stereotypical" traits, except a very small percentage.

In responce to your comments I have to say it's tough for minorities in this country and whether it's right or wrong majoriy rules. So they're gonna set the standard of what's beautiful or not. They're gonna have all the positions of power.

It would be nice if things were a little more balanced. I could go on about how apparently the standard of a beautiful black person is how light their skin is (notice the Beyonce' picture on the top right corner of your photo) but that is another topic for another time. I think the internet evens up things but if you're talking about this country (gud ol' U.S.A.) alone then you'll have a lot of waiting to do.

Not to sound sooo cliche and but there are beautiful woman in all races and culture that don't get their shine. And I know you mean Asians in general but your gorgeous and this picture looks great with all the colors. You can't really tell people what's beautiful or not because it's an opinion ya'kno but you look incredible in this photo... looks very professional

SHANGHAi In reply to Thomas-Anderson [2007-06-10 06:21:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you and I appreciate your well thought out response I agree that majority will have a say in what is considered beautiful no matter what, but that fact alone doesn't make me okay with the situation. I'm still a bit uncomfortable with it, but that doesn't mean anything will change either. Just hoping to pass along my thoughts
