Background:

Ryou Matsuoka is the eldest son and child of the Matsuoka-Smith family. He is the older twin brother of Hayato Matsuoka and the eldest brother of Sakura Matsuoka. Ryou has been a big ball of energy in the house ever since he was born. He loves playing with both his mom and dad and his younger siblings. He’s always shared a stronger bond with his father and it grew even more when he started learning how to swim. Rin would give Ryou private swimming lessons on different strokes, how to balance in the water, and various techniques. It helped realize that Ryou’s favorite stroke was butterfly since it contained a lot of energy and it was fun. However, it was the most difficult and least consistent for him. He later settled for his second favorite, breast stroke, and ever since then, he has entered relays for breaststroke.

“Ryou” (涼) has some similarities to “Rin” (凛) in both writing and meaning. Ryou means cool and refreshing, while Rin means cold. They both contain “小” (small), “亠” (lid), and "口” (mouth).

“Ryou” (漁) written differently means “fishing”. It is an indirect tribute to his grandfather, Toraichi Matsuoka, who used to be a fisherman.

He is part of a mini group called the "Matsuzaki Trio". The trio contains Ryouta Yamazaki, Hayato Matsuoka, and himself. Ryou is the leader of the Matsuzaki Trio.
